@ijbailey He apologized to BAFTA, and on that night, he left the ceremony. However, he never addressed Delroy or Michael by name nor explicitly acknowledged the deep distress, humiliation, and racial harm he caused them by (yes, involuntarily) shouting “niggers” at two Black men.

Other than why the BBC aired that slur, these are the other important questions. What counts as a "real" apology? He apologized, and even voluntarily left. Was that enough? Also, how are we defining harm here? Who was harmed? And how much?

John Davidson’s apology was inadequate, because he didn’t acknowledge the harm his tic caused Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan, which—of course—was not his fault. His “sorry” wouldn’t have been for culpability or ill intent, but to show empathy for the Black people he harmed.

@widyeaye @monisha_rajesh Davidson should willingly apologize properly to both Delroy and Michael. No diagnosis, condition, or creative context ever makes racial harm acceptable. The victims shouldn't have to accept this behavior all because someone has a disability. A disability isn't permission to harm.

Having seen the clip of Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo being subjected to the n-word on air at the BAFTAs I hope they were both given formal apologies. The way Black people are expected to remain dignified every time is so unjust.
