PR proponents will just never understand that single party control is a feature and not a bug. They lack a theory of the mind to understand that other people want different things out of elecoral systems. Some of us are *against* coalitions
Matthew S. Shugart@laderafrutal

“Mandate.” The party won 125 of the 165 single-seat districts on 44% of the vote. It’s MMM so they also got just over half the list seats on not quite 48% of the party vote (with an assist from fragmentation of the rest of the field). MMM is a lousy electoral system.

Two striking studies out this week show how noncompete agreements suppress wages. 1. A NBER paper shows that employed workers today are half as likely to receive better outside offers, likely due to rising employer concentration and noncompetes: nber.org/system/files/w…

@MattBruenig @mlipman13 @UpstandingMembr @lydiadepillis what’s the limiting principle here? Can former employees just abscond with anything from their employer? Any intellectual property? The formula to Coca-Cola? Google’s algorithms? Would you even have the concept of IP if employees can take literally anything out the door?

@mlipman13 @UpstandingMembr @lydiadepillis There are no doubt specific executives who cannot figure out how to run a successful business in an environment of labor and customer mobility, just as there are some who cannot do so without slavery. But others can do it successfully. We don't need to protect the incompetents.

Every normie feels in their gut that oil should go higher. And every oil expert seems to think that every day we get closer to the true disaster scenario. So why is it that oil is not only below the highs of the month, but, as @JavierBlas pointed out, far below the 2022 highs?

🚨🚨🚨 This year, a couple retiring at the normal retirement age (~67) could collect $100,000 in Social Security benefits. 💰💵 Our new Six Figure Limit would cap benefits at that level. A short 🧵

It’s amazing to me how many resources must be devoted to geopolitical strategy, intelligence gathering, and war planning in the US and Russia; and yet the two most high-profile wars of the last five years involve a military superpower attempting a blitzkrieg decapitation of an opponent and appearing shocked and stunned and flummoxed when the attacked adversary doesn’t surrender but actually fights back

@ThorningMichael @ChrisStirewalt a simple fix- defund the primaries. Maybe in a recession, states say ‘we’re not running & paying for primaries anymore. Parties can select their nominees however they wish, on their own dime’. State parties lack the funds to run primaries, so they’ll be forced into conventions

Smoke-filled rooms aligned candidate selection with general election electability. But those aren’t coming back. I think @ChrisStirewalt is on the right track that we need a system which better aligns candidate selection with general election incentives.
Ross Sherman@rossbsherman

.@ChrisStirewalt nails the #PrimaryProblem and the most realistic solution: open primaries, like what California has, or no primaries at all.

For those with long memories of 1956, it is mildly amusing that the US is now begging Britain and France for help in unblocking what is, in effect, a shipping canal.
