Directly publicly subsidized unions shouldn’t be able to hold us hostage with unreasonable demands. The governor is brave and should continue to be brave. city-journal.org/article/long-i…

The LIRR strike -- the ridiculous overtime, the silly work rules, the bloated pensions -- is just business as usual in our biggest cities. If you want to fix gov't services and restore fiscal sanity to city budgets, you've got to get a handle on public sector unions.

One might assume Mamdani's win was led by rent-regulated tenants, but that's not true Regulated & subsidized tenants favored Cuomo, and market rate tenants overwhelmingly favored Mamdani Education polarization is much more electorally powerful than narrow material interest

+ Mamdani won bc he promised to freeze the rent for the ~50% of New Yorkers who need that in order to stay - this worked + 47% of the city on Medicaid + This will not last forever. The city's housing stock is decaying, quickly

@izakaminska rightwing military dictatorships of South Korea or Taiwan? China has zero welfare state, crush unions, famously repress worker wages, etc. Yes they have lots of SOEs. But so did South Korea & Taiwan, and no one calls them leftists. I.e.- is China leftwing? Or actually rightwing?

@izakaminska I share your general China hawkishness. But just out of curiosity- are they actually 'Communists'? It is in the name, yes. But North Korea's official name is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and no one believes they're a democracy. How is China different from the

Layer one: Communists lecturing capitalists about property rights. Funny. Ha ha. Layer two: Communists lecturing capitalists after deploying mega state subsidies funded by wealth they’ve stolen from their own citizens through decades of financial repression to undercut and destroy capitalist companies so that capitalist countries can’t defend themselves and have to become communist countries. Less funny. And a justifiable national security intervention.

Another way to think about it is that America is just a series of regional cultures. New England is about the population of the Netherlands, has wildly more guns than any non-US country globally, and has the homicide rate of Canada. Meanwhile the South approaches LatAm rates
Matthew Zeitlin@MattZeitlin

one way to think about the US's homicide rate compared to other rich industrialized countries is that the new world in general seems to be especially deadly, here's canada vs big western european countries

@Navigat37899388 @mattyglesias New England has a population of 15 million or so people, extremely permissive gun laws *by the standard of Europe or the rest of the world*. And a homicide rate of 2 per 100k, or basically a Western European rate. So- 10000x the handguns of Europe, same homicide rate

@mattyglesias I support not demanding that Platner support gun control b/c Maine's gonna Maine and we gotta win the Senate but that doesn't mean we have to ignore the extremely obvious evidence that extremely permissive gun laws = way more gun deaths

@constans @conorsen These intermediaries are specifically not building and depriving other people from doing so in order to supply non fungible land solely to the largest home builders. hiding assets off their books like this is a good case of collusion and anti competitive practices in homebuilding

@MattBruenig @TheStalwart @DKThomp @BigMeanInternet @jdcmedlock if you had a machine with a knob that changed historical outcomes, California would be part of New Spain and the tax revenue from Lucasfilm’s IP would go to a different country. What notch in the knob makes the US deserving of Lucasfilm’s IP revenue?

@TheStalwart @DKThomp @BigMeanInternet @jdcmedlock Like if I had a machine with a single knob on it and all it did was change the expiration date in the US Code for IP durations. As I turn that knob to the left, the dates fall and Lucas' wealth falls. What notch in that knob matches Lucas's real productivity?

@davidshor @BarneyFlames yes, but independent commissions that *do what* exactly? You’re just drawing arbitrary lines on a map, there’s no inherently ‘right’ way to do it. You have to pick a standard. Compactness? Proportionality?

@BarneyFlames Other countries also have independent commissions - I'm doing some simulations on this, but if you imposed compactness standards on states but the state legislatures had a free hand otherwise it would be *more biased* than the status quo.

I think the big problem with gerrymandering is that liberals simply won't accept a common sense compactness standard, which would be in line with the actual constitutional setup of the House and also what most other countries do.
