@SMB_Attorney It’s all about freedom. You’re still working hard but nothing like the freedom. Even your current staff has freedom.

I left Kirkland in 2022 to launch my own firm. Who’s laughing now? If you said them, congratulations, you’d be correct.

@investing_law A highly productive few is stronger than a mediocre many. That is our strength. We have learned this from experience.
English

At the beginning, we wanted a high-powered small team.
After a year or two, we felt the pull to grow. Bigger is always better, right?
We’ve come full circle. For now, we will focus on increasing per-person productivity instead of adding headcount. Quality over quantity. Density over vanity metrics.
As of tomorrow (with the addition of a new associate), we’ll have 10 people. That’s enough people to: (i) have multiple practice areas; (ii) have partners to discuss ideas; (iii) go on vacation with robust backup; and (iv) have enough diversity of thought to innovate and experiment with new ideas.
We’ll continue to expand, but only with very high standards. Every time you hire someone new, you risk decreasing productivity, increasing complexity, and diluting culture.
I’m very proud of the team we’ve built. And the 10 of us will be outrageously productive. Hardworking, creative problem-solvers armed with technology can get a lot done.
(Because I wrote this post, I’m sure we'll need to hire again within three months.)

@L0ngfellowDeed5 @ClintFiore The walking increases my appetite which is a challenge but totally agree. I don’t have incline on my home walking pad but I do 3.0 speed and stay in zone 2.
English

@adamwasch @ClintFiore 12.5 incline, 2.5 speed, 1 hour. Intention to be in zone 2 heart rate the whole time. Do this as much as possible and the fat will start to fall off (if you manage your diet).

oh and DEXA result for my fitness journey update:
- 18.1% BF
- 30+ more pounds of muscle than an average dude my height
- leaner body fat than 7/10 dudes my age already (but want to keep my cut going and get leaner and into the 10-15% BF range)
I was 33% BF 2 years ago for reference and am down about 65 pounds since my heaviest. Super weird realizing, even though I'm still pretty thicc, I've got less fat on me now than most people do.
Having a lot of fun getting myself sorted out health-wise and have been ditching clothes that are too big for me all the time lately. Went from 2XL shirts to now L and maybe even a M on some.

@adamwasch Sometimes the cool wrapped truck business is more profitable. Then you have a win-win!
English

I’ve come to a realization about franchising.
A big reason home services franchises are more popular with males than senior care franchises is simple:
You get to drive around in a branded truck.
That might sound silly, but perception matters to a lot of owners.
A truck, tools, and a uniform feel like a business.
Meanwhile, senior care businesses are often dismissed as “staffing agencies” or “babysitting.”
That’s a huge mistake.
The demographics are undeniable.
Over the next decade:
• 10,000 Americans will turn 65 every day
• The 80+ population will surge
• Most seniors want to age in their homes, not facilities
Which means demand for in-home care services is going to explode.
We’re talking about a multi-decade demand wave that is almost entirely demographically guaranteed.
You may not get the cool truck.
But you might be standing in front of one of the biggest service industry opportunities of the next 20 years.

@TheApexLeader AI has certainly created work output efficiencies. I use it like I used to use associates for “extra eyes,” first drafts, adding terms to agreements, syncing FDDs and exhibits, turning redlines around quicker in M&A, etc. I still use Westlaw for research when needed. Love it.
English

@adamwasch That is an awesome goal. Seems like you have a mission you are trying to accomplish. That is where fulfilment comes from.
Random question: How are lawyers using AI? I would assume it drastically reduces your time spent on research and drafting documents, etc.

I took a lot of shit yesterday for posting about how life in a corporate career is defeating.
There was a lot of “God forbid you do minimal work, not worry at nights or weekends, make a good wage, make work friends, and retire with little stress.”
For most people, this is great. And you know what? Good for them. It does seem like a very easy, stress-free life.
For the select few of us who were “cursed” with a higher calling, I cannot just sit around and do minimal work. It is not in my blood. It does not fulfill me.
Honestly, it depresses me. I need a constant quest. A constant mission. Something hard to tackle. If I don’t have that, I feel miserable.
This is hard to understand unless you feel it too. It is not about the money. It is not about making our lives easier. It is not about romanticizing one version of life over another.
It is about the constant desire to be the best you can be. And it is an endless chase. It never ends.
English

@TheApexLeader I went from W-2 to firm owner to W-2 to firm owner in my legal career. The American economy is built for SMB. That’s a fact. Trying to get more lawyers with books of business to see the light.
English

@adamwasch I agree, but some don't see it that way. Trust me, I got roasted yesterday for saying otherwise.
We're all living our own lives for a reason. We don't have to do the same things. So to each their own.
