Guess how much SO2 you need in the stratosphere to offset 108.7M tons of CO2? We need just 108.7 metric tons of SO2—the weight of one Boeing 757. For context, that’s roughly the same amount of SO2 already emitted annually by just one large airport like BWI (Maryland). We’re talking about using the equivalent of one airport’s sulfur output to neutralize the warming of a 30GW national power fleet for data centers. @MakeSunsets balloons make this possible today for $108.7 million at the current retail price of $1/gram of SO2 deployed in the stratosphere, which offsets the warming effect of 1 metric ton of CO2 for a year. As we scale, we can get it down to $0.01/gram deployed.

At the very least, if you aren’t going to actually fund a secret strategy for deploying these technologies, fund a DARPA-like research institution, bring all the mad scientists together, and let them cook.
