Make Sunsets
@MakeSunsets
Actively cooling Earth by placing reflective clouds next to the Ozone layer. ☀️🧴🌍

Guess how much SO2 you need in the stratosphere to offset 108.7M tons of CO2? We need just 108.7 metric tons of SO2—the weight of one Boeing 757. For context, that’s roughly the same amount of SO2 already emitted annually by just one large airport like BWI (Maryland). We’re talking about using the equivalent of one airport’s sulfur output to neutralize the warming of a 30GW national power fleet for data centers. @MakeSunsets balloons make this possible today for $108.7 million at the current retail price of $1/gram of SO2 deployed in the stratosphere, which offsets the warming effect of 1 metric ton of CO2 for a year. As we scale, we can get it down to $0.01/gram deployed.

On 2/18/26, we launched 4 biodegradable latex balloons. 3 of which made it 27km+ which released the same molecules you put in wine to preserve it, to cool the Earth. Together, they offset the warming caused by ~6,031 tons of CO₂ over one year (equivalent to the annual emissions of ~1,311 cars). Watch the launch videos and details of each balloon below ↓ 1 of 4 Balloons Launch Date: Feb. 18th, 2026 Time: 1:34pm PST Balloon Weight: 1,500 grams SO₂ Payload: 1,600 grams Injection Altitude: 17,487 meters Delivery: Kaymont HAB-TX-1500 weather balloon Note: did not make it past 20,000 meters, so did not issue Cooling Credits for this deployment

If you planted 10 million mature trees and let them grow for a year, you’d get roughly the same cooling effect as our 222,983 Cooling Credits deployed to date. Thank you to all our customers, investors, and last but not least, the people who shout at clouds for helping spread the "good" sulfur into the stratosphere to cool Earth.
