Democrats in the Legislature tried to ram through ranked-choice voting for governor, state senate, and state house races by redefining 'plurality' in the state constitution. Instead of the candidate with the most first-choice votes winning on election night, RCV eliminates candidates and shuffles votes in multiple rounds — letting someone who didn't get the most direct support still claim victory (just like it did to Bruce Poliquin in 2018). It looks like Democrats need this vote-manipulating system to keep winning races where they can't secure the clear plurality. The Court rightly blocked their latest attempt to bend the rules. This is a major win for the Maine Constitution and the rule of law. For years, politicians have tried to twist our election system into something it was never designed to be — ignoring clear constitutional language in pursuit of political outcomes. Today, the Court drew a line. Our Constitution is not optional. It is not flexible based on political convenience. And it cannot be rewritten by legislation. This ruling reaffirms a simple principle: 👉 If you want to change how we elect our leaders, you don’t go around the Constitution — you amend it. The people of Maine deserve an election system that is transparent, constitutional, and trustworthy. And today — the Constitution won.
