RIP Mark Knoller — a long-time pillar of the White House press corps and a true legend. I first met Mark in the late 1990s. I was in awe of how quickly and decisively he worked. After a presidential event, reporters would rush to the press bus and the first thing you would hear was Knoller’s booming voice, instantly distilling what we had all witnessed in 30- or 60-second for @CBSRadio. He was generous colleague — like so many others, I relied heavily on his self-created database of presidential activity (“Hey Mark, how many times has President Bush stopped by the Crawford Coffee Station?”) and, at key moments along the way, his dry sense of humor. One more thing - Knoller was a reporter’s reporter. He reported the facts. I never had any clue what his political views were or even if he had any.
