@NornQueenKya @mearn4d10 @XEOR_ Even then, I absolutely wouldn't trust GW if they did say it, because I've seen them say "you can still use you existing collection!" multiple times across edition changes and it has often not been true (moving to 3rd edition 30k they outright lied about a lot of things, frankly)

@NornQueenKya @mearn4d10 @XEOR_ I haven't noticed any such confirmation, and all the articles talking about the new custodes have been in the HH section. The new box also appeared only in the HH section of the store, and 40k Custodes infantry are still on sale as usual.

@XEOR_ @NornQueenKya As a Knights player who sees this worry all the time about the Cerastus Knights: Yeah, no. There’s a vast difference between the vast BLOAT of SM datasheets and the lean scarcity of Knights and Custodes. It’s likelier that these end up in the 11th Codex than vanishing.

@idioticsynergy 4th edition's mix/match doctrines was perfect for building Guard to meet certain flavours and I lament it's loss.

Looking at the old rules and man do I miss what warhammer 40k used to be like

@idioticsynergy It's a weirdly messed up image in ways AI would do it (super inconsistent armour shapes, flag tops), but also in ways AI would never (wtf is up with the wall artifacts?).

@GLURAK20XX @khuryaggoth @st0rmeris @HashionDiscord I was careful with the phrasing; "character models" versus "kits". Ultramarines have 11 named characters in 40k, 7 of which are in the Wardens box. They also have two more named characters and two generic characters in 30k. Some factions have fewer than 11/15 kits.

@LnkMxwl @idioticsynergy @HashionDiscord Cadians were the default plastic kit for 18 years, no other regiment made it to plastic until the DKK Kill Team kit arrived in 2021. Then there's the legacy Catachan kits which are impressively still around of course.

Cadia blew up yet there is still billions of the dull bastards roaming around but I guess Steel Legion doesn't get that pass. Imagine streamlining the guard of all factions?

@heavenly_otter @NornQueenKya @Aeldarellie The books on my shelf beg to differ. Catachans had their own Codex, Steel Legion had their own list in the Armageddon book. Death Korps and Elysians had their own lists too. The next edition let you build custom regiments with a doctrine based system.

@ambershee @NornQueenKya @Aeldarellie They do now. I don't know if it is part of how they justify having separate kits to their shareholders or something (or it's just part of the whole "the only options are what is in the box" thing). But in the past they did not.

@heavenly_otter @NornQueenKya @Aeldarellie The fact there are five loyalist *Terminator* kits, let alone 'basic marines with bolter or bolt pistol/combat weapon' kits is just an ample demonstration of the problem. There are currently 28 total types of Space Marine Terminator on sale.

@heavenly_otter @NornQueenKya @Aeldarellie There's no reason different plastic guard infantrymen couldn't also have different rules and be different units. In fact, they did in the past, and they currently still do. Catachan, Cadians, and Krieg are unique datasheets. Krieg Riders and Attilans also have unique datasheets.

@st0rmeris @HashionDiscord Pretty sure ultras unironically have more bespoke units than blood angels at this point. At least in terms of plastic kits (painting assault intercessors black for death company doesn’t count)

@NornQueenKya @Aeldarellie 28 Terminator kits currently on sale, but GW also taking 30 years to finally refresh the Eldar line, Dark Eldar with a third of the line just missing, Guard regiments boiled down from umpteen lines into just three (including one legacy one still alive from the 90s).

This is really where the focus of the discussion needs to be. Gw isnt lazy or forgetful, or whatever nonsense people are claiming. But they totally are allocating too many of their dev resources into SM, which will be fun in 11th when an insanely large chunk goes into legends because theres way... way too many datasheets atm

@MarcusCVance They do. The Mechanicum makes extensive use of them. Bionics on the other hand are inferior to the Space Marine; but Space Marine cyborgs do exist (they become interned in Dreadnoughts).

If you can make cyborg arms that are capable of doing everything A SPACE MARINE ARM IN POWERED ARMOR can do, why not just make more cyborgs?
