I wasn't arguing with that. I was explaining why "they can boss them around" required more nuance than pure rank because just saying "it's billets" wasn't helpful. I was expanding on your point. Upping your situational awareness is more beneficial than seeing everything as a confrontation.

If the division sgt maj shows up a 1st LT whos company xo isn’t gonna demand anything from him accept maybe proper greeting. Master Chief is basically the spartan equivalent of Sgt Maj of the Marines. He has authority given to him by the Commandant a 4 star general and acts on his behalf. Thats how billets work for high ranking NCO’s. As long as you are operating within the parameters and billet assigned by an officer superior to the other officer they have zero operational authority over you.

I can't recall Halo ever getting into specific billets. But, outside of a war zone, he'd need to salute her. And during my military career I can't think of any billet where I would have addressed the enlisted instead of the officer if they both came to my post. Potentially a training situation. In basic, I recall them making a point of the highest enlisted is still outranked by the lowest officer. But every officer would be wise to learn from the NCOs under them. And chain of command and specific job would dictate who an officer could boss around more than simply rank. But the original statement was that Master Chief outranks an Lt. Which Shae was correct in saying wasn't true.

Idk, she was super thrilled to see Johnson. Then she was just skeptical of Master Chief instead of automatically hero worshipping him. She implies there was a PR campaign around Spartans. Given how real armed forces are known to exaggerate stuff like that (just check out the marketing for the M17, Future Soldier programs, or military-entertainment complex products), I can't blame her for not taking them at face value.
