@polidemitolog Exactly. Communists remained in power all over the former Soviet republics, with very few exceptions. They and their children continue to enjoy wealth and power they've took from enslaved people in those countries.

It was one echelon of the ruling communist elite in the USSR that botched the reforms and it was another strand of the same system which afterwards took power in Russia and gave it the most painful economic transition. I'm tired of the discourse that portrays the process as if some evil anti-communist dissidents came to power and wrecked it all.

In all honesty, if Putin knew when to stop and cut his losses like Trump does, not only would whole Europe, and obviously Ukrainians, be better off, but it would've been the best outcome for Russians as well.

@mattia_n And don't forget about existing security guarantees (or if you with "assurances") provided after Ukraine gave up nukes. Everyone in Ukraine remembers about them, and won't believe any new guarantees will be anyhow better.
