This simple example changed the way I look at journaling: How Marcus Aurelius became the last of the "5 Good Emperors" through writing: Aurelius's life and reign was chaotic to say the least: โ€ข his closest friend betrayed him in a coup โ€ข he fought off a bloody invasion that lasted 5 years โ€ข the Tiger River flooded causing dramatic damage and famine โ€ข the Antonine Plague struck killing more than 10 million people โ€ข his wife was probably unfaithful (based on rumors) โ€ข he had a difficult son (see "Gladiator" ๐Ÿ˜†) Yet he still found time to write in his journal. Not for fame (he was emperor!), but to meditate on his life. Through all the chaos, he made the time to process his emotions and discover his thoughts. We don't write because we've got it all figured out. We write because we're figuring it out.

A bet: Can you write a story using only 6 words? Ernest Hemingway took this bet. He wrote: โ€œFor sale: Baby shoes. Never wornโ€.

In 4 minutes, Kurt Vonnegut explains stories better than anyone Iโ€™ve ever heard. โ€œThe shape of the curve is what matters. Not their origins.โ€ He plots stories on 2 axes: X: Time Y: Good fortune / ill fortune He goes on to say, โ€œSomebody gets into trouble, then gets out of it again. People love that story. They never get tired of it.โ€ Point 1: Stories have defined patterns. In Joseph Campbellโ€™s Hero of a Thousand Faces, he makes the case for the Heroโ€™s Journey. Since then, itโ€™s become the most famous storytelling structure in the world. Vonnegut argued stories could be divided into 8 shapes. Each story, he said, fit one of the 8. Point 2: Vonnegut says, โ€œBe a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them โ€” so the reader may see what they're made of.โ€ To see who your characters really are, you have to make them suffer. Only then does your audience have someone worth cheering for. Point 3: End on a high note. Vonnegut says, โ€œItโ€™s not accidental that the line ends up higher than where it began. This is encouraging to readers.โ€ The way a story makes people feel when they finish is how they remember it. Itโ€™s called recency bias. Lift people up and they will love you. *** โ€œThere are people. There are stories. The people think they shape the stories, but the reverse is often closer to the truth.โ€ I wrote this with @RobbieCrab. Follow him for lessons on storytelling + fundraising. And I talk about creative storytelling & writing fiction. Follow me @nathanbaugh27 for more like that.

6 months ago I was constantly chasing the next big thing. Iโ€™d spend hours thinking about where I wanted to go, how much I wanted to make, and what my โ€˜dreamโ€™ life would look like. Every time I stumbled across someone doing better than me, it was a signal that I fell short. But things took a turn lately. Instead of spending 7 days out of 7 thinking about the future, I started spending a day a week appreciating where I am, and what I have. Itโ€™s changed my world. And weirdly, since doing that, things have consistently moved in the right direction. I woke up this morning, grabbed my coffee, looked out the window, and reflected on how grateful I am that this is the life I live. I get to do the work I adore (most of the time), I make more than I need and I spend oodles of time with the people I love. Do I want to be doing better, writing better stuff? Sure. But am I elated with where I am, what Iโ€™m doing, and the life I lead? Absolutely. Take the time to reflect on where you are, you might realize you have everything and more.
