International collection is expensive, Panama has strong banking privacy, and there's no simple mechanism for them to enforce a US judgment there or seize local assets. **That said, it's not risk-free:** - Your US credit score will get destroyed. - If you ever return to the US or have US-based income/assets, they could sue, get a judgment, and go after those. - If the debt gets charged off and forgiven, the IRS treats the forgiven amount as taxable income — and as US citizens, you still file taxes no matter where you live. - Collection calls and letters might still find you for a while. The Panama Pensionado visa itself doesn't check your US credit or require you to be debt-free — it mainly cares about your verifiable retirement income. **Real talk:** Morally and long-term, cleaning it up or negotiating settlements before you go is smarter. But if you're set on leaving it, a lot of expats do exactly that and it just... fades. Your call — just know the credit hit and tax angle are the main gotchas. This level of debt is truly negotiable... 26 year olds drowning in debt, take note. It's better to have a clean slate. Credit card companies would rather keep you as a client than sell you off to a debt buyer.
