Americans are carrying $1.35 trillion in credit card debt. Nearly 1 in 4 Americans have debt in active collections. Overall delinquency rates just hit their highest level since the 2008 financial crisis. And what does the debt relief industry offer them? 🧵

@1lilamir What motivates you most to payoff your credit cards? The $0 balance? Avoiding high monthly interest?

@WikkedBlissy Lol this is a myth. Debt don't just disappear because you leave the country. You're better off negotiating it.

I'm doing lots of research and this popped up...so you can just skate your credit card debt if you move to another country. 🤣🤣🤣 I'm just trying to help y'all out! This is crazy!! Total dirtbag move but I'm not mad about it! 😉🤭 **Practically speaking, yes—you can mostly leave it behind.** US credit card debt is unsecured, so creditors rarely chase people aggressively overseas to a place like Panama. International collection is expensive, Panama has strong banking privacy, and there's no simple mechanism for them to enforce a US judgment there or seize local assets. **That said, it's not risk-free:** - Your US credit score will get destroyed. - If you ever return to the US or have US-based income/assets, they could sue, get a judgment, and go after those. - If the debt gets charged off and forgiven, the IRS treats the forgiven amount as taxable income — and as US citizens, you still file taxes no matter where you live. - Collection calls and letters might still find you for a while. The Panama Pensionado visa itself doesn't check your US credit or require you to be debt-free — it mainly cares about your verifiable retirement income. **Real talk:** Morally and long-term, cleaning it up or negotiating settlements before you go is smarter. But if you're set on leaving it, a lot of expats do exactly that and it just... fades. Your call — just know the credit hit and tax angle are the main gotchas. Want me to dig into settlement options or the tax side more?

Just took my paycheck and all the money I made from stand up this weekend and used it to pay off half of my credit card debt and now I feel like I’m not drowning as much anymore. Honestly great way to start the day.
