Maybe we've become too enamored of the notion of value and worth as applied to people, and it's time to give it a break. Here's my hot take: people don't have value (or worth), they have rights and responsibilities. People's skills, abilities and assets have value (or worth).

What the hell happened to the iOS control panel? Looks like someone shotgunned icons across a bunch of screens at random.

As I've been diving into compilers, I (re-)discovered C--. But it looks like it died out in the mid-2000s (except maybe for GHC). Can anyone provide a reason or context around this?

What if we could only code by using examples? How can we integrate AI into actual programming languages? I made a little proof of concept:

@basus American exceptionalism blah, blah, but India's constitution is fascinating!

All this election nonsense reminds me that one of my "someday" projects is to do a comparative study of national constitutions, starting with India & the USA. And yes, seeing if/how much they can be formalized using modern tools like Lean.

This is the first time in my life that I'm making a big change, but no direction so far has felt 100% right. Not sure if that's just a side effect of getting older, or something more fundamental.

So, is "cooked" good or bad? Asking for me and my fellow confused millennials.

@basus my understanding is that it's contextual: "they're cooked" -> bad "they cooked" -> good "let them cook" -> uncertain, to be determined

@samth I think this basically worked btw. it’s pretty low volume and not every question is a winner, but the site is mostly about interesting things instead of syntax! and it’s attracted people with PL expertise to write the answers. stack exchange model stays winning

I‘ve been participating on langdev.stackexchange.com for the past few days, and it’s been a lot of fun, but the community is badly in need of more people with real knowledge about PL/compilers. This is not a super high bar, and I suspect that many of my followers clear it.

Womp womp passed final round interviews for a research position at a certain big tech company, but doesn't look like they can find me a matching team, so guess I'm still looking for gainful employment.
