I am all for efficiency and ultimately downsizing the federal government, but firing large numbers of new FBI agents is not the way to achieve this. Louisiana specifically benefits from newly hired FBI agents. We need to add to our law enforcement, not take away.

As someone who has worked directly with the NSF award database and without COIs from direct NSF affiliation or funding, I can tell saying 27% of grants "went to DEI projects" is categorically wrong.
Did the NSF, in recent years, encourage PIs to be more inclusive in grant writing? Yes.
Did all of these 27% of awards in question get their awards solely for DEI reasons without any scientific merit (like the title suggests)? Absolutely No!

@jeffbigham @TaliaRinger I could imagine it, although there are federal rules about what is direct and what is indirect costs that would probably have to be changed.
And in any case it would be an administrative disaster to budget at that level. Overhead exists for a reason!

I have to say it's a very weird day on academic Twitter to see "[high] overhead is good, actually." I'm strongly against cuts to scientific funding, but I think the overhead at most universities is absurdly high and has its history in clever tax evasion strategies

@TaliaRinger True. But what is the alternative? Someone has to pay for grad student and faculty offices. Should grad students go without, and faculty share offices? And that's just one thing that costs money.
University overhead isn't actually that high. Company overhead is way higher!

In case anyone is still doesn't understand how grant overheads work, here's a screenshot from one of my NSF grant budgets.
Total direct cost: 419k
Indirect cost ("overhead"): 181k
Total grant: 600k
Overhead rate: 181/600 =~ 30%
So why do people think overhead is higher? 1/

I retired from the American University system at age 49 (after 26 years) so have no direct stake in this.
But am here to say that drastically cutting NIH & NSF funding and reducing grant “overhead” to 15% are among the dumbest ideas I have ever seen.
America will never be the same. Science will take a huge hit; academic stars will leave; university reputations will crumble, and homegrown talent will be even harder to find.
Asia and Europe will profit.
Epic unforced errors.
