@thedawgspodcast I don’t have an issue with anything you said except for the “came in and played competent ball” part. He absolutely did not play starting QB caliber football last season. Not even close.

These details are important when considering what Shedeur Sanders was able to do last season. Did he have some low moments? Absolutely; like DiNucci said, there’s a huge learning curve from college to pro. And yet Sanders showed he could play competent ball despite the learning curve, which was even steeper for him. He was fourth on the depth chart, received no first-team reps all summer, was throwing passes to trash cans and water boys in camp… The kid stepped in after halftime against the Ravens (Wyatt Teller confirmed the o-line had never even heard Sanders’ cadence before). And he got his ass kicked in those two quarters. Came back the next week and torched the Raiders in his first-ever NFL start. And before you say, "It was just the Raiders," remember we were "just the Browns" and had the same crappy record as Vegas. If Shedeur was able to defy the odds as a rookie in that situation, why wouldn’t we expect him to take a significant step forward in his second year with an entire offseason and training camp of ACTUAL preparation?

Ask any longtime Browns fan; the Browns have done this so many times since 1999. Trade back, pass on the best players. Collect draft picks, then pick lesser players. 4 winning seasons in 27 years. Maybe just pick the best players.

The response to Cleveland acknowledging Deshaun Watson may start at some point this season is fascinating. He has to be on the roster from a cap perspective. What is more interesting to me is what is not being said: the team's willingness to take its lumps this season in order to be in a healthier cap position next year and potentially in position to draft a quarterback early. I understand fans do not want to hear that they are tanking and going through a rebuild for the 18th time in 20 years, but that seems to be the plan.
