Sono le 3:55 del mattino del 2 giugno 1981. Rino Gaetano perde il controllo della sua Volvo 343 su via Nomentana, all'altezza di viale XXI Aprile. L'impatto è frontale con un camion. Trauma cranico gravissimo. Coma immediato. Arriva un'ambulanza. Inizia il giro. Policlinico Umberto I: reparto traumatologia non disponibile. San Giovanni: nessun posto. San Camillo: stesso copione. Santo Spirito: idem. Quattro ospedali di una capitale europea che rimandano indietro un uomo che sta morendo, uno dopo l'altro, nella stessa notte. L'ambulanza gira Roma per circa due ore e venti minuti. Solo all'alba, intorno alle 6:00, il Policlinico Gemelli accetta il ricovero. Gaetano muore nello stesso momento in cui entra. Trent'anni di vita, troncati da un sistema che non trovava un letto. Fin qui, una storia tragica come tante. Poi qualcuno va a rileggere i testi. Nel 1971, dieci anni prima, Rino Gaetano aveva inciso "La ballata di Renzo". Era una canzone satirica sul sistema sanitario italiano, il solito bersaglio, la solita denuncia. Il protagonista, Renzo, ha un incidente sulla sua Lambretta. L'ambulanza lo porta in giro per Roma. Nel testo compaiono, uno dopo l'altro, questi nomi: Umberto I, San Giovanni, San Camillo, Gemelli. Ognuno "completo". Ognuno che manda via Renzo. Gaetano aveva scritto la sua morte per finta in una canzone satirica. Dieci anni dopo, quegli stessi ospedali, nella stessa sequenza, rifiutarono lui in coma su un'ambulanza. Gaetano non aveva previsto il futuro. Aveva descritto un presente che nessuno aveva cambiato. La canzone non era una profezia. Era una diagnosi.
