Back at the turn of the 1st century, the thondai Nadu was very much Tamil and there are many literary and inscriptions that talk about the area north of Vengadam as Vadukur, and language spoken there as Vaduku, an earlier variant of Telugu. Kongu Nadu was also Tamil but the regions adjacent were also known as Vadukur, though there are some indications Kannada was coming in to existence. All sangam texts from 4th century BC refer to Vengadam as the border for Tamilagam.
