@KaidenMcCormic2 AI enthusiast sees a game filled with soul made by someone who is clearly trying their best and getting better at their craft... and cannot comprehend it.

@valigo I don't think anyone expects their vent post to become a week-long twitter shitstorm

I say this every other month at this point. If you're an indie dev - DO NOT farm reviews on twitter, unless they attack you personally. It literally never works as you expect.

@DArtgoop Well then my definition of casual would be low-stakes non-sweaty gameplay, like hoard shooters. Deep Rock Galactic, Helldivers 2 if it were actually still fun. For a casual competitive game maybe Rocket League, but not ranked. Ranked ruins everything.

@dhdev10 When I said elaborate, I meant on your definition of casual. I personally do not play horde shooters. and within my group of friends the games we do play tend to lean on the competitive regardless of mode. Minus Stardew valley and monster hunter

Would it be a stretch to say casual gaming doesn’t exist in multiplayer games anymore?

@eckoboy3 @WalterRQThe3rd Singleplayer puzzle games generally have less replay value than coop friendslop games I'd say. But 'replay value' isn't exactly quantifiable.

If the Steam Refund policy gets fucked over because of some bottom of the barrel friendslop asset flip game made by a german redditor that nobody has ever actually played you guys are going to have to hold me back :'()
Crypto Jargon@Crypto_Jargon

be Mateo - 23 years old - solo game developer from Germany - goes on vacation, tries paddle boating with his brother - realizes how hard it actually is - gets home, builds a physics-based coop paddle game around the idea - ships the demo in 2 weeks - releases the full game as "Paddle Paddle Paddle" - game blows up - sells over 150,000 units - goes full-time as an indie dev - named Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2026 should be a total win - 90% positive reviews - game clearly works, clearly isn't broken but the game is short, tight, and easy to finish fast - 55,000 refunds - 21% refund rate - $164,000 clawed back at $2.99 a copy not because it's bad because Steam's refund window has a blind spot - less than 2 hours played, 14 days since purchase - instant refund, no questions asked - built to protect buyers from broken games - can't tell "this didn't work" from "I beat this and want my money back" this exact exploit already happened in 2021 - different indie dev, Emika Games, hit the same wall - nearly quit the industry over it Valve still hasn't fixed it - posts about it publicly, gets support from the community - keeps developing anyway - already teasing his next game, a coop voice-controlled chaos game called CAAAHR went from a shower thought on vacation to 150,000 units sold to a six-figure hole in his pocket, all from the same industry that put him on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list

@eckoboy3 @WalterRQThe3rd Portal can be completed in under 2 hours. Just because the policy gives you 2 hours doesn't mean that games have to be over 2 hours long. If you were mis-sold a game and it didn't meet your expectations because it was too short, and it was 2.5 hours long. Steam will still refund.

@dhdev10 @WalterRQThe3rd My guy, there's literally an option to refund because the game is too short. That's a dev problem, not a steam problem at this point.

@AzureKlo @WalterRQThe3rd You need to stop confusing vent posts with serious anti-consumer lobbying efforts. Wishing Steam would enforce their existing rules against refund abuse isn't anti-consumer.

@dhdev10 @WalterRQThe3rd He literally coorelated them. Complained that he had dozens of reviews like that and a high refund percent and that steam needs to do something about it. Which no they dont. There isnt evidence of mass abuse. his percent is that because of his game not the pro consumer system.

@fish_man_9000 @PJ11819211 Because people play good games long after launch, even singleplayer ones. Disco Elysium has 2500 concurrent right now. And review score matters. Mostly positive is one step above Mixed, which Redfall is with under 2k reviews. Meanwhile Dishonored is overwhelmingly positive.

@dhdev10 @PJ11819211 Why are you referencing playercount on a single player story driven game what. Yea mostly positive all time reviews its a pretty good game. This is the steam chart for prey in my opinion one of the best games ever made. it has low numbers because its a single player story game.

@AzureKlo @WalterRQThe3rd 1 comment boasting is evidence that 1 person did it. The dev didn't even say that his 55k refunds were due to refund abuse. Certain news accounts have, and many of them have been community noted over it. x.com/Dexerto/status…

An indie developer claims over 55,000 players refunded their Steam game after beating it fast enough to qualify for Valve's refund policy Steam's policy allows players to refund games if they have less than two hours of play time

@dhdev10 @WalterRQThe3rd 1 comment boasting is not evidence. He has an achievement for beating the game under 2 hours and only 7% of players have it lol. So much drama over a youtuber slop game where the dev lied about how serious the problem is.

@AzureKlo @WalterRQThe3rd Positive review and boasting about beating the game under the 2 hour time limit is evidence that there's at least 1 person who did that. Also a vent post on x accidentally going viral isn't exactly 'abusing his platform' who do you think the dev is?

@dhdev10 @WalterRQThe3rd He is abusing his platform by lying. There is zero evidence a lot of people are refunding the game after beating it vs just because they dont like it.

@fish_man_9000 @PJ11819211 Mixed recent reviews, mostly positive all time reviews. Completely flatlined playercount after a very tepid launch. Its just corporate gamepass slop designed to fill a catalog, not something people actually wanted.

@KanaKujo @MaZu_iceTea @LordeDaAlvorada Saying it's a non-issue is fine. People saying games with less than 2 hours of gameplay don't deserve to be monetized, or I can refund for any reason within 2 hours because Steam says so - are not fine. Which I've seen plenty of.

@dhdev10 @MaZu_iceTea @LordeDaAlvorada Defending it because it's literally a nonissue is perfectly fine in the end. Again the amount of people we even have seen admit to doing it for these refunds is less than half a percent of the refunds, a mere fraction of a percent of sales.

@dhdev10 @MaZu_iceTea @LordeDaAlvorada And a big part as to why people are defending the behaviour is the line "Would be cool if you could finally do something about your refund policy" to many this is coming off as him wanting to remove or limit refunds

Gaming tourists cry 'censorship' at every turn. They're afraid payment processors will come after their favorite 'games.' But why have Minecraft or Half-Life 2 never been canceled? Is this really about games or just an excuse to prioritize sexual content over gameplay?

@KanaKujo @MaZu_iceTea @LordeDaAlvorada The dev himself has said the 55k aren't due to refund abuse. But the discussion isn't about whether these cases are statistically significant, it started over a single screenshot of a positive review and apparently scummy behavior, with plenty of people defending that behavior.

@dhdev10 @MaZu_iceTea @LordeDaAlvorada I doubt majority are there will always be people who do but they're few and far between. Numerically they're not an actual issue, and based on the achievements and refund numbers it's more likely majority are refunding because it's not that fun to them or has bad netcode.
