Schools have become too afraid to teach kids to pronounce “th” not ‘f’, annunciate their T’s, and stop dropping their H’s.
‘Multiculturalism’ shouldn’t mean giving up on standards.
WEATHER REPORT:
Those in Wales / Midlands, what’s currently falling out of the sky?
Always good to get ‘on the ground’ information to compare with the radar 🌧️ ❄️
In my local area of NE Dorset, 2025 was on track to be the warmest year on record... until the final day. With lower night & day temperatures than forecast, the annual mean dropped 0.003°C below that of 2022.
Yes, 3 thousandths - 2025 is arguably the joint warmest on record.
@emollick@chrism07204 If you're China, and everyone uses your free open weights model, destroying the western labs' business model in an embarrassing way, that's a lot of value.
A lot of discussion on open weights models seems to assume there is a clear incentive for building them. I don’t see how is the case. Unless you have no need for money (government sponsored?), there are no real ways to capture value from your model even as model cost increases.
@ryanpolland@theclassic24@autosport Yeah, but he had a fast car and would have had a tyre advantage - if he'd got overtaken he'd have a fair chance of getting the lead back.
@theclassic24@differentiabul@autosport The tracks changed since 2016 making passing under drs so much easier , if verstappen did this it would have likley back fired
McLaren’s #AbuDhabiGP strategy played a key role in preventing Max Verstappen from adopting tactics reminiscent of Lewis Hamilton at Yas Marina from 2016 in the F1 title showdown ⬇️

@Dohboy24@MattP1Tommy Yeah maybe (low risk, I'd say) but what did he have to lose? Even if he did have a bad stop he'd probably overtake again on fresh tyres.
@Dohboy24@MattP1Tommy No he didn't, he could have come in for a free pit stop and backed up the pack, and waited to see what happens. Really cannot understand why he didn't.
@theclassic24@autosport Yeah I don't understand this, it makes no sense. Surely Verstappen pits and tries to back them up, just to try and cause some chaos. Maybe there's a crash behind, maybe a SC, maybe Norris makes mistake. I know he risks losing an easy win....but there's a championship on the line.
@kopdublin81@SkySportsF1@CroftyF1 If Verstappen or Piastri are in front, they can back Norris into the pack. Like Hamilton tried in 2016. That could get fun. I don't see Norris going gung ho on lap 1 to get the lead.
@SkySportsF1 Lando isn't going to do anything
Just finish in the top 3
It's gonna be a boring race
There is a huge amount of joy from @CroftyF1 and all at Sky in asking Piastri those questions
Surprisingly good for the first try.
Nano banana pro: "create a map of the US where every state is made out of its most famous food (the states should actually look like they are made of the food, not a picture of the food). Check carefully to make sure each state is right."
Girls and boys are reaching their peak growth spurts earlier than they did a generation ago.
In 1998, they hit them at 11.5 for girls and 13.5 for boys, but now they're hitting them at 10.5 and 12.8.
@Oz_ShelDuck@cremieuxrecueil This is growth rate distribution at different ages. Doesn't mean an individual child tracks the same line their whole life.
@cremieuxrecueil There is something wrong in the graph. Short boys average 3cm/year over 12 years equals 36 cm growth. Tall boys 8cm/year over 14 years equals 112 cm growth. That is an impossible divergence.
NEWS: The Chancellor @RachelReevesMP confirmed to me tonight in @itvMLshow that those whose only income is the State Pension will NOT PAY INCOME TAX - not just they won't do self assessment, there will be no tax to pay during this parliament.
This is important as the pension triple lock means the State Pension must rise by at least 2.5% each year. So from 2027 someone whose only income is the full new state pension will earn more than the personal allowance (the amount earnable each year before you pay tax) - so tax would be due.
Here is a transcript.
ML: Rebecca, says ‘does my 85 year old father, who's living with dementia now have to complete a tax return as his state pension will take him over the personal allowance?’
RR: So if you just have a state pension and you don't have any other pension, we are not going to make you fill in a tax return.
ML: Of any type or?
RR: Yes. And so I make that commitment for that, for this Parliament. You're right. 2027 looks like the time that it will, cross over. We are working on a solution, as we speak, to ensure that we're not going after tiny amounts of money.
ML: but people will have to pay the tax. They just won't have to do a return or will they not have to pay the tax?
RR: in this Parliament they won't have to pay the tax. You know, further out about to make any commitments, on that. But we're looking at a simple workaround at the moment.
ML: Okay. So I hadn't actually got that from budget. So that's really good to have clarity that they won't be paying the tax.
This is far more than was said in the budget speech which was just about not doing an assessment. I went on to ask about edge cases "those who have £50/yr of income" and she said she couldn't make the same promise in those cases, it was only for people with no other income.
The ECM is signalling a second stratospheric warming with a strong Canadian warming at the end of the month.
I can’t remember the last time everything was *this* skewed towards cold weather outcomes.
Very interesting times to be a fan of cold & snow.
@tompeck I sometimes have to pull up to a petrol pump with my fully electric car in order to fill the jerry can for the lawnmower. I have to expect that every time I do it I'll end up in the local Facebook group.
Not a big fan of taking pictures of strangers and putting them on social media so you’ll just have to take my word for it that I’m currently waiting at a petrol station behind someone trying to fill up a fully electric VW ID 3. Could be here a while.
