FRIDAY MORNING WEATHER (Powered By: Rose City Air & Altra Federal Credit Union - Texas) Well, well, well…welcome to Friday! You, my friend, have almost made it to the weekend. We’re oh so close to it and some slightly cooler air. • While we still have some ridging in place across our part of the country this morning, it is in the process of reshaping, as its orientation allows for some very modest northerly flow aloft, which is helping to usher a cool front southward into the region at this time. It’ll be this front that takes our temps down somewhat through at least the first half of the weekend…something we haven’t seen too often of late. Granted, this won’t be a full-throated cooldown by any means. But, it will make an impact on things for a brief time while the surface high responsible for the fresh air quickly scoots across our part of the country. • Our morning overcast game is again quite strong across the area today, and we will continue with these clouds well into the morning, too. Thanks to a good southerly wind, we’ll also warm nicely once again ahead of this front, which will make its way gradually across the area through the afternoon hours. Obviously, this will allow for some decent warming to occur out ahead of it, and that’ll have plenty of 80s on the board by day’s end in many locations that are south of I-30. You guys further north will get in on the northerly wind a bit earlier, and that’ll limit your ability to warm as much. • Once this front does pass through, though, the combination of the cooler air being overrun by a warmer flow up at around 5,000’ should result in a good amount of cloud cover that’ll carry us on through the night and much of the day on Saturday. Along with that will also come some scattered light rain pockets from later this afternoon through tonight. Now, this shouldn’t amount to much, but the presence of the moisture at all is nothing I’m angry about, especially given the drier air, higher wind, and the continuing fire concerns that maintain. Models have been hinting at this potential for a day or two. • Otherwise, the forecast continues pretty much on track with clouds through much of the day on Saturday and that breezy northeasterly wind as well, at least through early afternoon. • We should eventually start to lose the clouds later on Saturday along with the wind, and this will set us up for the coolest night of the affair on Saturday night, which ain’t gonna be that cool. • High pressure will already be in the process of getting east of us on Saturday night, and we’ll have a full-on southerly wind and some decent sun back in here for Palm Sunday. That alone will result in a 15-20° swing in temps from Saturday to Sunday afternoon. • Warm and Breezy will be the operative words from Monday into Tuesday as we await the arrival of a more protracted opportunity for some rainfall by the middle of the week. This is something we’ll be talking much more about both over the weekend and especially as we get into Holy Week itself. Right now, I think Easter will be subject to some showers across our neck of the woods…just so you know. • On this date in 1961, a strong tornado affected Northeastern Nacogdoches County. Unofficial historic assessments estimate it to have been in the neighborhood of an F3 as it tracked from just east of Appleby to just north of Aiken. THURSDAY MORNING WEATHER (Powered By: Rose City Air) Well, here we are. Welcome to the last Thursday of March, as well as Opening Day for Major League Baseball! A week from today, we will have long since welcomed the month of April to the stage for a 30-day engagement…one that is notoriously noisy across our 26-county area. • The first thing that sticks out to me is the fact that the weather map is showing a pretty large contrast in barometric pressure across our part of the country this morning. With surface high pressure off to our east and developing low pressure off to our northwest, this has set up what we refer to as a “tight pressure gradient”, and that makes the wind blow in an effort to regain some semblance of equilibrium. All that to say, it’s gonna be a bit breezy today. • In fact, you can already see this at the surface with the way the wind has stayed up somewhat overnight, and just off the surface, a few thousand feet up. That draw in aloft has helped to establish low clouds across the area, which will remain in place well into the morning before they gradually give way to the sun. • Further up in the air column, high pressure, which has been the dominant feature on the weather map for a number of weeks, and has helped to keep us so warm and dry, is transitioning eastward across the southern third of the country, and this going to continue to be the case through the day as it remains a tad more centered over our area for a few more days. However, it is going to be manipulated over the coming days by the stronger flow aloft, which is situated further to our north. That manipulation will result in a more northwesterly orientation across Texas by tomorrow, which will allow for our next cold front to enter the picture tomorrow. • Thanks for the ridging aloft and pretty weak moisture content overall, tomorrow’s front will come through dry, but will still have a decent impact on our weather. More on that in a second. • For today and tonight, we’ll remain much warmer than normal with temps starting off this morning closer to what you’d normally expect to be afternoon highs as opposed to morning lows. • Friday’s front will wait until later in the day to make its way across our area, and that’ll mean another warm day areawide ahead of the boundary. Once the front does come through, look for the wind to make a switch back into the north, and this will be the signal of the cooler and drier air beginning to make its way into the area. • The overall thought process with the front and weekend’s weather really hasn’t changed. This airmass will have us pretty dang pleasant, especially when you consider how far askew we’ve been from normal of late. So, even though it’s not some big blue norther, the fact that we’ll be back even just a tad below normal for temps for the day on Saturday is kinda noteworthy. • Pleasant nights on both Saturday and Sunday night will be another highlight of the weekend and this airmass. However, the surface high bringing it in will be pretty quick to transition east and that’ll allow for our winds to swing back around to the south by Sunday afternoon. This will signal the start of another warming and moistening trend that will take us into next week. • Of more significance, though, is the fact that our pattern aloft will also be in the process of transitioning back to more of a southwest to northeast configuration across this part of the country, which is more typical of Spring. This setup always gets severe weather folks fired up ‘cause it can allow for better dynamics to begin feeding in our direction for storms, when combined with increased moisture at the surface. • There has been quite a bit of chatter amongst some of the longer-range severe weather modeling for an uptick in this kind of thing as we get into next week, particularly the second half of the week as the pattern matures. That said, there are wetter signals in there by this time, too, which is encouraging for a drought-plagued area like ours. And, SPC is also talking about this, although not yet in a position to start outlining any areas just yet, given the distance from the event and the kind of vagaries that go along with that. Still, I think it’s just a matter of time before we start to see that. If you’ve been around here for any length of time, you know that too. • On this day in 1961, two tornadoes passed north of Alto, in Cherokee County, during the mid-to-late-afternoon hours. In a later reanalysis, they were given an estimated rating of F2 due to the damage that was observed. WEDNESDAY MORNING WEATHER (Powered By: Rose City Air) Happy Hump Day and welcome to Wednesday! Overall, we’re warmer across the board this morning, compared to where we were at this time on Tuesday. You can thank a tad more southerly wind overnight and the formation of some low clouds for the work in that department. Dew Points have made their way back up into the low 60s, and the temps are not far behind. • Ridging aloft has made its way a little further east today, compared to its position on Tuesday, and that will also play into our ability to warm more efficiently today, compared to what we saw even yesterday. This should mean mid-80s in a lot of spots by this afternoon in the face of some decent sunshine, once we get these low clouds out of here gradually this morning. • Look for us to “rinse and repeat” tonight and then on Thursday, with temps making a similar arc in the process, although I think we’ll have even more of a breeze on Thursday to work with, and that very well should get us another degree more of temp by the time it’s all said and done. • Our next cold front is still on the board for Friday, although it’s no huge “blue norther” like we’ve seen at a couple of points over the last few months. This one will, however, pull our temps back somewhat for the weekend as drier air helps to with the overnight temps. And, I think you’re really going to like the conditions on Saturday as we top out not too far from the 70° mark that afternoon. • Over the weekend, the ridging aloft, which has been so successful at keeping us dry and warm, will be in the process of meandering to the east, and that move will help to reorient the pattern aloft back toward more of a southwesterly orientation over our area. It’ll be this southwest flow that will eventually open the door for some better lift to cross our part of the country and help to lead to some better rain chances, albeit likely not until we get much deeper into this next week, which will mean approaching Good Friday and the Easter weekend. TUESDAY MORNING WEATHER (Powered By: Rose City Air) Good morning and welcome to Tuesday! A week from today, we’ll be in the process of tying a bow on the month of March as April will arrive at midnight. And, with Palm Sunday upon us this weekend, we’re now less than two weeks out from Easter. • As has been the case for so many mornings of late, we’re quiet and mild across the area this morning. And, like I said yesterday, these milder mornings are “on the clock” as we ready to step into April, which means May is right around the proverbial corner. So, that eventual blanket of humid air is not that far away. • Clouds continue to stream southward into our area this morning, thanks to continued ridging off to our west and the flow around it. This same ridging will gradually build east toward us over the next few days, helping to boost temps once again. But this will be the last gasp, at least for a while, as the ridge finally breaks down by early next week and the flow begins reverting back toward what you would expect for late-March/early April, and that looks more southwesterly as opposed to the (dry) northwesterly flow we’ve seen for the last few weeks. This will be the catalyst for helping to return some rain chances by the middle of next week. • In the meantime, we’ll see our stretch of warmer-than-normal temps continue through Friday, ahead of what will be our next relatively weak (and dry) front. I do think Records are safe, for now, through the end of the weekend, though. So, we’ve got that going for us. • The airmass behind Friday’s front will be a bit drier, and that will help to bring the dew points back down over the upcoming weekend, which I doubt many folks, other than the firefighters, will be concerned with. That same move will help to bring overnight lows down on both Saturday and Sunday morning before we start to recover early next week. • On this day in 1962, three tornadoes were reported to have affected Smith County during the afternoon hours. I know the allergies have been especially rough this year for so many folks, myself included.
