@corpseinorbit might be totally wrong here, but I think the smoke is just the flux/rosin and the lead-free solder is more about disposal of the product than the health of the solder-er. Gloves for handling, yes, but hey what do I know, I learned before extractors so maybe I’m full of lead.

How do people learn to solder. I would love to be able to solder. In a sense, which I'm still making up, I need to solder. But how do you learn that shit without a big ventilated room and a workshop desk and are all you motherfuckers still using 60/40 lead? And breathing it?
