The Lawyer Who Jumped Through the Window — the 1993 case of a Toronto lawyer who fell to his death trying to prove a window was unbreakable. In July 1993, Garry Hoy, a 38-year-old partner at the prominent Toronto law firm Holden Day Wilson, was giving a tour of the firm’s offices on the 24th floor of the Toronto-Dominion Centre to a group of prospective articling students. The TD Centre was known for its modern design and exceptionally strong glass windows. Hoy had performed the same demonstration many times before to impress visitors: he would run and throw his full weight against the glass to show how unbreakable it was. He had always bounced harmlessly off. This time, he did it again. The glass held firm. But the entire window frame popped out of the wall. Hoy fell 24 storeys to the courtyard below. He died instantly. The glass itself never broke. Investigators later confirmed the panes met all safety standards, but the mounting system was never designed to withstand a running adult slamming into it. Hoy had been right about the glass. He had simply been testing the wrong thing. The incident became one of the most famous cautionary tales in Canadian legal and safety circles A brilliant lawyer. A simple demonstration. One second that changed everything. And a final lesson written in the most literal way possible: sometimes the window holds, but the frame does not
