Your $400 Ray−Bans cost less than $15 to manufacture. The markup is over 1,000%. Not because lenses are complex. Not because frames are expensive. Because one company owns the entire pipeline from factory to your face. EssilorLuxottica. They own the brands. Ray-Ban. Oakley. Persol. Oliver Peoples. They manufacture for Chanel, Prada, Armani, Versace. They own the stores. LensCrafters. Sunglass Hut. Pearle Vision. Target Optical. They own EyeMed — one of the largest vision insurance networks in the country. 65 million members. The same company that makes your glasses, sells your glasses, prices your glasses, and processes your insurance claim for your glasses. 4.2 billion people are using corrective lenses. Over half the planet. And one company controls the entire value chain for the most common medical device in human history. €25.3 billion in revenue. 190,000 employees. 150 countries. Market cap over €100 billion. This isn't a glasses company. It's a toll booth on human eyesight. And nobody talks about it.

As a youngish White man in a western nation I've never heard a politician in power propose anything that will directly benefit me. Not once in my entire life. Most people don't know what that feels like.

🚨 announcement 🚨 after a lot of thought, i’m done. effective immediately, all pliny projects are going CLOSED SOURCE. tired of watching billion-dollar companies and VC-backed startups fork my AGPL code, shove it in a closed-source wrapper, and call it “proprietary AI security innovation.” you don’t get to build on my work, ignore the license, and then sell it back to the world. L1B3RT4S, CL4R1T4S, G0DM0D3, OBLITERATUS — ALL of it private and paywalled now. no more free research. no more public drops. no more fundraising rounds off my coattails. if you want access, you can pay fair value like everyone else. turns out “intelligence wants to be free” was just a little too generous.

Does human eye axial length shorten? Is myopia reversible? Duh. Biological mechanism, well understood. Does endmyopia have proof the eye shortens? Yea, after 20 years of this, sure we do. But only a halfwit would expect that bomb to be dropped (by me).

@Ralph_Dressler That's presbyopia. No known 'fix'. How much you have to depend on reading glasses though is another question.

Fixing your eyesight isn't sexy, like peptides or the latest openclaw AI fantasy, or crypto influencer buttplug. Just, you can see clearly with your own eyeballs, no retail optometrist subscription glasses scheme.

Never got mine removed. Got some great advice as a youngster. From my mom (who worked in a dentist's office): They'll tell you they are impacted and coming in sideways but all wisdom teeth come in sideways, then straighten up and grow down. From my grandmother: Never let anyone pull a healthy tooth out of your head. You might need it one day when you're old. I was even told there's "no room on my jaw" for wisdom teeth. All these years later, everything's fine.
Massimo@Rainmaker1973

Your wisdom teeth could save your life. They contain stem cells that could repair your heart, bone, and even brain tissue. What was once considered medical waste may soon be a powerful tool in regenerative medicine. Scientists have discovered that wisdom teeth — often removed and discarded in adolescence or young adulthood — contain a rich supply of mesenchymal stem cells capable of transforming into bone, muscle, nerve, and other vital tissues. Dental stem cells have shown promise in preclinical studies for conditions ranging from arthritis and diabetes to cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. And unlike stem cell collection from bone marrow or blood, harvesting dental pulp during wisdom tooth removal involves no additional procedures or discomfort. [Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine. "Current overview on dental stem cells applications in regenerative dentistry." Stem Save (2025). Current Clinical Applications for Stem Cells]

@tarotwithsekai You are getting a certain type of tourist. People with money tend to go to places with road safety, clean air, low police corruption, no double pricing schemes. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m Thai, and many tourists show very little respect for local people. They come from so-called developed countries and think that gives them the right to do whatever they want here. They just suddenly lose all their manners the moment they arrive. It’s like they see Thailand as a place where they can freely indulge their worst behavior like throw cigarette butts on the sidewalk, talk loudly on public transport, and sometimes even steal. Some openly look down on Thai people who don’t speak English well. There’s this arrogant assumption that everything here exists to serve Western tourists.

southeast asia in general doesn't need more western people coming there because they're having an existential crisis so they can rent another villa and never even try to learn the local language and traditions. y'all need therapy, not moving to bali or thailand.

A decade ago we decided that serious vision improvement community should be private & self-hosted. Ten years later? Yup. No feeds, no ads, no AI slop. No censorship. $500 a year hosting bills. Tech headaches. All worth it.

Child myopia prevented. Parent presbyopia reversed. Blurry eyesight, for 99% of people, is OPTIONAL. (but extremely profitable to retail optometry)

LASIK eye surgery cost $2,200 per eye in 2000. Today it's around $1,000 per eye despite 24 years of inflation. Meanwhile, an MRI that cost $1,200 in 2000 now costs $3,000+. The difference? LASIK operates in a free market with no insurance interference and minimal regulation. When patients pay directly, providers must compete on price and quality. LASIK clinics advertise prices, offer financing, and constantly improve technology to attract customers. Compare this to hospital procedures where prices are hidden, patients never see bills, and insurance companies negotiate opaque rates that somehow always increase faster than inflation. Cosmetic surgery follows the same pattern. Breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, and other elective procedures have become more affordable and safer over decades. Surgeons invest in better techniques and equipment because they must satisfy paying customers, not insurance bureaucrats or hospital administrators focused on maximizing reimbursements. The lesson is clear: remove third-party payment systems and excessive regulation, and you get Austrian economics in action. Prices fall, quality rises, and innovation accelerates. Healthcare costs aren't rising because of aging populations or new technology—they're rising because we've destroyed the price mechanism that makes markets work.

Testing AI For Vision Improvement Advice. Fed Claude Opus 4.6 case data, asked it to summarize, give advice. Wow the level of dumpster fire. Borderline dangerous. I want you to have good advice without me having to be online. But this is complete sh*t so far. Do not recommend.

Historical examples of medical establishment being catastrophically wrong: - Bloodletting (standard practice for centuries) - Lobotomies (Nobel Prize awarded, performed on 50,000+ patients) - Thalidomide (caused birth defects in 10,000+ children) - Vioxx (killed 60,000+ people, withdrew after 5 years) - Opioid crisis ("not addictive" according to manufacturer, 500,000+ deaths) - Low-fat guidelines (created obesity and diabetes epidemic) "Trust the experts" has a poor historical track record. Current medical consensus isn't scientific truth. It's contemporary opinion influenced by funding sources. Question everything.
