Your Word says our life is a vapor, here for a moment and gone. So fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. Let us live in a way that echoes into eternity, faithful, bold, unshaken. Give us peace that surpasses understanding. Not peace because circumstances are stable, but peace because You are sovereign. Remind us that Christ has already overcome the world. That the cross was not defeat, but victory. That the resurrection was not a possibility, but a declaration that Your purposes cannot fail. So we stand today with confidence: Your Kingdom will advance. Your purposes in Christ will prevail. Your glory will fill the earth. Keep us faithful in the meantime. Watchful. Prayerful. Steady. Wore my “Just a Dad Trying Not to Raise a Liberal” shirt to a few open houses down here in Florida. Got a bunch of nods and a few “I love your shirt” comments. Traded a challenge coin with one of the local deputies from the sheriff’s department. Really proud of the fact that my daughter then thanked him for his service. In response, the leadership of the Florida State Guard unlawfully and punitively demoted Howard in an effort to silence him. The wet sound of a man drowning in his own chest cavity. The sky black at noon — not cloudy, black, like the sun choked and went out. And at the base of the cross a dog. Muzzle red. Tongue dragging through the dirt where blood pooled and thickened in the heat. Flies crawling on the dog’s face while it drinks. The iron smell of it mixing with the dust and the sweat and the urine running down the legs of men who lost control of their bodies hours ago. Nobody’s cleaning this up. Nobody’s covering the bodies. The soldiers are sitting in the shade throwing dice. Jerusalem is half a mile away and a woman is buying fish for Passover dinner. She can see the hill from the market if she looks up. She doesn’t look up. The dog doesn’t know it’s drinking the blood of God. Doesn’t know the thing drying on its tongue held the universe together this morning. Doesn’t know. Doesn’t care. Just thirsty. Just a dog on a hill on a Friday afternoon doing what dogs do to blood. That’s where your unanswered prayer lives. Not in a sermon. Not in a worship song. In the painting where God is gone and the thieves are still dying and the only thing that showed up for the blood was a stray with no name.
