Hamish Hamilton, the acclaimed director behind major global events, reacts to BTS’ Comeback Live show. “It’s absolutely enormous,” said Hamilton, who flew into Seoul just hours after Conan O’Brien said his good nights on the Oscars. “Getting off the plane, people were talking about it. I have so many emotions today. I don’t think there’s an English word for it. It’s a sense of coming home after a long, difficult time away (I guess Arirang is really perfect). Relief, excitement, anxiousness, having been through so many battles but finding your place again…and it being even better than before. For those of us who have been here since before the enlistment, thank you for staying. You all have been my sanity and comfort during those difficult days. For those who are newer and overwhelmed with your first comeback, we’re so so thankful you’re here. We’ve gone through so much together and we are finally coming back home. [📰 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒] Press Media Q&A with #BTS. Q1. How do you feel about your comeback after 3 years and 9 months? Group: We are excited and nervous, but above all, we are overwhelmed with emotion. We are happy and grateful just for the fact that the seven of us can gather and do something together after such a long time. We have returned with amazing preparations, just as much as ARMY has waited for us for so long. The very fact that we can show you our best selves again is a source of great emotion and happiness. Since it is our first group album in a long while, there is as much fear as excitement, but we have no major worries because the members and ARMY are with us. Q2. What is the main message you want to convey with this album? #SUGA: We pondered what is most like us. Rather than a grand message, we focused on 'us' itself. #Jimin: I wanted to say that we are constantly moving forward. There is always the pressure to show a new and better side of ourselves. There are also countless concerns. Nevertheless, we wanted to express the mindset that we will not stop and will continue to swim forward. #Jungkook : We hope you will think that the most BTS-esque album has been released, as it fully captures each individual's time and color. Q3. How were the 'Korean elements' included in the album decided? #RM: First, we threw out various ideas that came to mind. During the songwriting sessions, we even created a song based on Taekwondo. It didn't make the final album, but I personally liked it quite a bit. I believe Korean elements are an important keyword that can bind the seven of us together. This is because they are connected to where we started, our roots. What constitutes "Korean" is constantly being redefined and changing. I think it would be interesting if we could become part of that flow. #Jin/#Suga: The album logo originated from Jungkook's idea. The current album concept was established as the members' opinions were added from various angles, and since all of us are Korean, there was also a suggestion that we should naturally incorporate Korean elements. #JHope : We also infused the excitement and culture of Korea into the lyrics of the new album. We tried to create more 'points where the seven of us can be together' in various aspects. I believe that returning and showing ourselves as we are ultimately means starting from our roots. I believe we are who we are today because those roots were solid together. #V : All the members contributed a lot of ideas and thought deeply about how to incorporate our individual personalities. EXACTLY. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ordered special safety measures for the event. The PM personally checked Incheon Airport’s BTS-related arrival preparations. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, one of the most visible officials tied to the event. Korean reporting says he chaired meetings on the BTS comeback. And him personally inspecting Gwanghwamun Square ahead of the concert. Authorities are expecting around 260,000 people in and around the venue area. Seoul is mobilizing thousands of personnel; reporting has cited 4,800 police + 3,400 officials, while later coverage described security deployment rising to 6,500 police officers. The venue area is being treated like a stadium-scale controlled zone, with a 1.2 km security perimeter from Gwanghwamun to City Hall. Seoul is hosting a monthlong BTS-themed festival, with media facade shows at Sungnyemun and Namsan Seoul Tower, a drone show at Ttukseom Han River Park, and large-scale fan content screenings around the concert weekend. Officials set up 31 designated entry points/gates to control access. There are metal detectors, random security checks, rooftop restrictions, road closures, and special anti-terror measures in place. Even the stage setup itself became news: staff were already building the comeback stage days in advance in Gwanghwamun Square. And they share it with us. -Shout out to that army on site who was 134340ft from the ground- The concert is large enough that Seoul launched a crackdown on illegal lodging and price abuse around the venue. The Plaza Seoul hit 100% occupancy for the concert night, and nearby districts saw budget hotel bookings surge 450% year over year. International travel interest exploded: searches for trips to Seoul rose 155% within 48 hours of the tour announcement. The strongest reported figure for foreign attendance is about 100,000 foreign visitors, but that appears in media analysis and should be framed as an estimate, not an official government final count. South Korea raised the terror alert level for central Seoul ahead of BTS’s comeback concert. That is government-level security response, not normal concert prep. Local businesses are moving for BTS: shops turned purple, restaurants stocked up, retailers launched fan promos, and merchants are bracing for a sales surge. Bloomberg estimated the free Seoul concert alone could generate about $177 million in economic impact. When your comeback is big enough for government alerts, airport inspections, landmark light shows, purple storefronts, and a monthlong city festival, insane economic boost. And… When the people who protect Korea’s heritage allow you to walk the King’s Road, you are not only Paving The Way. You are being written into the nation’s history. @SaraBangtan07 I would say about 6 months. Although they had been on my radar since 2019, they found me in June 2021 with Butter. I fell hard but I didn’t feel comfortable calling myself ARMY until January 2022.
