@AltFemKG @b0n0myt1res Tend to agree but the other options are not looking good - Rayner, the favourite, would be a disaster.

Carns could unironically the best choice. Rayner would be a disaster, too unpopular, tied to Starmer, approvals of close to -50. Wes I like but membership will never accept him. Carns nobody knowing will be good because he can make a fresh impression. As a vet he'd be a counter to Reforms nationalism. If people want an 'outsider' like Carney then Carns fits the mould

@toly @vkhosla Then why has the US closed all but one military base in Greenland? In the cold war they stationed 10k soldiers in Greenland. Now it's 200.

The entire problem is that there is nothing eu can move to Greenland to provide a deterrent. So USA needs to build up a large enough presence there that it might as well be under USA control in practice. Nuclear deterrence is useless without conventional parity. If eu had a deterrent, there would be nothing to worry about. x.com/toly/status/20…
toly 🇺🇸@toly

Preemptive strike wins in MAD because it’s ev+ for survivors of the strike to sue for peace. So the second strike has to come before the first one lands, otherwise it can’t be a deterrent. Russian subs that sneak through the giuk gap can strike faster than a response strike can launch. This is why geenland matters and will matter for the next thousand years.

Welcome to the world of might is right! This should motivate every country to start its own nuclear bomb program because they cannot rely on international rule of law and AI will make the development easier. How much damage one dumbass can cause! The French nuclear arsenal should be moved to Greenland asap as a favor to the world to activate the MAD defense and deter Trump!
The Kobeissi Letter@KobeissiLetter

BREAKING: President Trump announces a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, Netherlands, and Finland beginning February 1st. This tariff will be increased to 25% beginning on June 1st. Tariffs will remain in effect until the US reaches a deal to buy Greenland. “It is time for Denmark to give back,” Trump says.

@Variety Kinda interesting how Timothee Chalamet is talking about how he's entered some acting stratosphere and here he is in a movie with Kevin O'Leary, who's basically never acted in his life

Kevin O'Leary on filming #MartySupreme: “I learned my lesson that film sets are not democracies. I’m not used to being told what to do. I do the telling. We shot something 20 times and I said to Josh, ‘OK, I think we got it. We can move on.’ He said, ‘What the f*ck are you talking about? There’s no moving on until I say we’re moving on.’” wp.me/pc8uak-1lGKkx

@Pleyndamour @BBCLeeds @RachelReevesMP £2.5B seems a bit pricey. Phase 1 tram line in Edinburgh connecting to the airport cost £800M by comparison and that was well over budget. The phase 2 line only cost £200M.

@BBCLeeds Course it has. The government could put resources and time into it to make it go faster, but instead choose to kick the can down the road to make it someone else’s problem. You should stand up for your constituents @RachelReevesMP and actually deliver something meaningful

Everyone has been asking where is Alon and why has Pump been so quiet? I’ve had my suspicions and they have turned out to be true. Alon and Pump are being investigated currently for violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (“RICO”), violation of New York General Business Law §§ 349 and 350, and unjust enrichment. Alleging that Pump alongside Solana cofounders operated a meme coin casino to coordinate Maximum Extractable Value (MeV) bot extractions, manipulating token launches. Also granting insiders early access to new launches while misleading ordinary people. Some tokens I’ve seen mentioned were PNUT, FWOG, and FRED. For those who don’t understand law there was an original class action filed in January 2025 and then amended to include more charges and defendants. These cases take years to resolve and often have an unfavorable outcome. Case #: 1:25-cv-00880 New York Southern District Court. Last updated order on December 11, 2025. There is also something to be said about how meme tokens specifically as securities are unregulated. It’s not 100% known the legal ramifications or remedies from this lawsuit, however Pump is a company registered in the UK which has strict laws about consumer manipulation. I am sure this the reason for the total silence from Pump and its operators. In filings it was also shown that Alon is currently 22 years old. He is a higher up at Baton Corporation which is the parent company of Pump. I will attach sources below. wolfpopper.com/news/pumpfun-c… o2k.tech/blog/pump-fun-… pacermonitor.com/public/case/56…

I met a man at a party who said he listened to P. G. Wodehouse audiobooks. Me: I don't think I could do that. I'm very picky about Wodehouse. I don't think I could listen to someone reading him unless it was– Him: Stephen Fry. Me: Yes.

1/the UK can never go bankrupt in its own currency 2/the debt are the private sector net savings. 3/The debt doesn’t fuel inflation, the interest paid on it can, but that is a policy choice. 4/To run a country as if it were a business would be incredibly destructive.
Rob Moore@robprogressive

The UK is on the verge of bankruptcy - national debt has hit nearly £3 trillion, & 100% of GDP That means the country owes as much as it earns That kind of debt fuels inflation, weakens your savings & makes you poorer And there’s only one thing the government will do: KEEP raising taxes Why are people who’ve never run a business in charge of the economy?

Martin Lewis, prominent UK financial broadcaster, known for helping Brits 'manage their finances', is finally doing an investing show for the first time in 13 years This is the S&P500 over the last 13 years Love to see this, a great step, but really drives home the reality of just how much money the average Brit has left on the table over the decades thanks to the culture of being allergic to taking risk You might think having a cash ISA and getting a few % per annum risk free is great... but you are getting OBLITERATED medium-long term through inflation and de facto debasement of fiat currencies You might think £100 a month, even £10 a month isn't worth it, but it adds up long term due to compound interest. Get investing for the long term asap

For the 1st time ever in its 13yr history, tonight 8pm @itvMLshow is a beginners guide to investing. Who should invest, how much, where & how? I'm a touch nervous as its outside my usual territory, but I've a panel to answer Qs and think its a crucial topic. Got questions you want to suggest send them to the team at martinlewis@itv.com

Been looking into this Motability stuff. If someone gets PIP and gets a VW Polo it costs £280 per month. If they drive a Mercedes it also costs £280 per month. The difference is made up by the disabled person.

The new EV mileage tax is 3p per mile. Small number, dystopian future. The big question is how they plan to charge it? Every EV is already an internet-connected computer. So what’s next? - A central mileage register that quietly logs every journey? - Automatic tax deductions from your bank account the moment you drive? - A car that simply refuses to start if your balance isn’t topped up? And once the infrastructure is in place, how long until 3p becomes 5p… then 10p… then £1? Nope.
