It’s unrewarding to post about climate on X. You get a tsunami of insults and disinformation from ignorant or bigoted deniers, or cause more worry to the enlightened who already feel powerless. However, as it’s rarely reported by the media, and affects us all profoundly, we must share these facts.

As the first reanalysis data become available, I think I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that the March 2026 heatwave will go down as the most anomalously extreme heat event ever observed at any time of year in the southwestern U.S.

“Extreme global climate outcomes may occur even under moderate 2C warming for several sectors. For droughts in global key breadbasket regions … global climatic impact-drivers at 2C…may turn out to be much more extreme than model-averaged projections at 3C or 4C warming.”

For decades, First Nations people in British Columbia knew their ancestral homes—villages forcibly emptied in the late 1800s—were great places to forage for traditional foods like hazelnuts, crabapples, cranberries, and hawthorn. A 2021 study revealed that isolated patches of fruit trees and berry bushes in the region's hemlock and cedar forests were deliberately planted by Indigenous peoples in and around their settlements more than 150 years ago. It's one of the first times such "forest gardens" have been identified outside the tropics, and it shows that people were capable of changing forests in long-lasting, productive ways. Learn more on #InternationalDayOfForests: scim.ag/4dtVm9Q

New study finds the current heat wave in the West would be "virtually impossible" without human-caused climate pollution. We're on the verge of breaking an all-time March heat record for the US today/tmrw. cnn.com/2026/03/20/wea…

What happens when Indigenous knowledge and Western science come together on the land? Indigenous fire practitioner Michela Carrière is working with partners from Queen's University to study cultural burnings and the particularities of smoke. This study is part of the We Are Fire project, an initiative aimed at advancing Indigenous-led fire stewardship in the region. Learn more about the project: wearefire.ca

Hassett: If the war were to be extended, it wouldn't really disrupt the U.S. economy very much at all. It would hurt consumers, but that's really the last of our concerns right now.

Extreme wildfire spread isn’t just wind-driven. We show the Camp Fire’s explosive growth came from plume-coupled spotting: embers lofted, transported, and deposited in organized zones 5–10+ km ahead, igniting new fire fronts. #CampFire agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.10…

Not going to hold back words here. Expect major highway closures on Sunday night through the SW BC and WA Mountain passes. There is a significant landslide risk now after this past storm. This is a new and strong Atmospheric River about to slam into us, and it follows right on the heels of one of the strongest Atmospheric Rivers we have ever seen for our area. (WA) An AR5 followed by an AR4. I'd expect rainfall rates around Metro Vancouver in the 50-150+ mm range Sunday-Tuesday with a 2,500m elevation Freezing Level. Even Whistler Peaks will be seeing Rain at times in this one. All of it will be 100% runoff straight down all of our Mountains. Buckle up! #bcstorm

This really is not looking good guys. This 3rd round of the Atmospheric River will end up doing more damage than what has already been done. The snowfall in the higher terrain after this passes will also hinder repair efforts that need to be done across the passes. Our state is about to be in one hell of a mess. This has already been devastating, and is about to get a lot worse. I will try to keep updated on this through the weekend. Pray for families that are affected and will be affected more by this next round. We are looking at an almost worst case scenario.

If you can call it a break weather wise. Enjoy it while you can in SW BC and the PNW. Next week is starting to look really, really, really ugly too. A likely Category 4 Atmospheric River of the dreaded Pineapple Express variety. Is following closely on the heels of a rare Category 5 Atmospheric River that just devastated many areas of WA this week. This is definitely a worst-case scenario setup, and major red flags are being thrown left, right, and center on this one. I'm posting it now, so you aren't caught off guard. This forecast verifies, and you will see precautionary multiple major highway closures in BC. 96 hours out on these weather models is a pretty reliable time frame. This is bad stuff on deck here. @SeattleWXGuy @50ShadesofVan #bcstorm #wawx
