Note: I published this as a Twitter Article but @ClarenceWongCRE helpfully told me that Articles are getting deboosted - for now. So here it is again as a simple Tweet: Commercial Real Estate Impacts Everything At an outing someone will ask me what I do for a living. Commercial real estate transactions, I say. I go on to briefly explain what a tenant rep does. They immediately compare my world to what they likely know the best - residential real estate. This is an imperfect comparison. So I thought I'd take a minute to describe the CRE industry. Have you ever seen a big building with lots of people going in and out? Of course, that’s commercial real estate. It’s where businesses work and people shop and live. In fact, it is where we operate much of our lives. Did you go out for dinner last night? Did you watch a movie? Maybe you drove there in your new car? Did you wear that new outfit from an online seller? All supported by commercial real estate. Retail brought the final experience, but the food and clothes came from a warehouse which was supported by executives who sit in an office. Commercial real estate impacts everything. Commercial real estate is important to people, but also to the economy. because it provides places for businesses to operate and supports local governments through property taxes. It also helps to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. How many times have you seen pictures of joyous public officials cutting the ribbon on a new facility that will generate lots of new jobs? Commercial real estate is a big economic deal. In 2023, the commercial real estate industry contributed $2.5 trillion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. That’s a lot of money! The industry also supported a total of 15 million jobs. Commercial real estate is differentiated from residential real estate because it either is a place to conduct business or if you are an investor in a building then you can generate income. Residential real estate provides a place to lay your head at night and raise your family. Residential real estate is for the most part non income generating. Commercial real estate is the engine of our economy. Let's put the peddle to the metal! Stats source, NAIOP RESEARCH FOUNDATION - ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE 2024.
