The Harsh Mathematics of Missile Defense We already saw that missile interception is an Inverse Problem, which are much harder than ordinary Forward Problems. The defender is not given a full state of what is incoming. It has to infer it from incomplete, noisy, time-critical information, and then respond BEFORE the picture is even fully clear. Salvos make this worse. A single incoming missile is one problem. A burst is another beast entirely. If active incoming missiles are B and ready engagement channels are A, then a toy salvo picture says the defender's expected reduction of the incoming wave behaves like ΔB = max(0, (αA − b₃B) / b₁). Here αA is the defensive firepower available right now, while b₃B represents how the incoming wave and its burden on the defense eat into that advantage.
