I think I knew that I had arrived as a Postie when, maybe my first or second day, Marty came in for his evening shift and made his customary walk through the newsroom, greeting every reporter by name as he walked to his desk. He stopped at the new guy, read my name plate. From that day, every day around five o’clock: “Shane, hello.” “Hey, Marty!” This ritual marked each day, like a bell tolling, and made me feel instantly at home.

As a reader: losing the Maryland schools reporter in the middle of a massive redistricting project in Montgomery County is a loss many suburban moms/dads like me are going to feel fast and hard.
Nicole Asbury@NicoleAsbury

I’m among the hundreds laid off today by The Post. It was a dream to write about education for @postlocal. I don’t have answers over what future coverage of Maryland schools will look like. If you have job tips, please send them my way

Also: By my estimate, there are now only two reporters of color in the entire Features department at the Post after layoffs.

extraordinary - the post's stated emphasis is national security who will cover Iran/Saudi? Israel? Hamas and the future of Gaza - and given US policy how all these things affect national security?

Laid off from the Washington Post, along with the entire roster of Middle East correspondents and our editors. Hard to understand the logic. But I am grateful for my incredible colleagues, whose grit and dedication to the reporting and each other I will miss dearly.

I was so lucky to work at the @washingtonpost for more than a decade, alongside tenacious, world-class journalists. I know how deeply committed the staff is to the mission of holding power to account, and how much grit and bravery they bring to unearthing stories that would otherwise go untold. The loss of so many journalists is gutting for all of us who care about The Post and its long history of independent, rigorous reporting.
