Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth...without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, SEX, language, religion, political or other opinion..." In 1948 sex and gender meant the same thing. They still do.

@PhoebeGostick @_CryMiaRiver Yes. That is how all drugs and treatments are studied. You compare the condition of the people who had a drug or treatment with the general population. Where it’s a drug you can also include a placebo. But that’s difficult to replicate for people getting body parts cut off.

@_CryMiaRiver So wait… you’re saying basically a study that is including two-thirds of people who didn’t get treatment = automatically good science?

It’s not hard to understand. They are protecting their financial and social status. I don’t think many people have principles that override their self-interest. The mistake is to assume that women are more principled than men - that wealthy women are more likely to care about other women’s rights than wealthy men. I don’t think it’s true.

@lazarusatgate @SwipeWright It would be silly to label oneself in terms of a fictional entity. Nor is there any reason to favour one fictional entity (god) over the many others (Dracula, Batman, fairies, goblins…). It makes far more sense to label believers ‘theists’.

As an atheist who used to believe something like this, the rise of gender ideology forced me to take the L. I'm still an atheist, though unfortunately I think the saying “When men stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing —they believe in anything," has some merit.

But I’m sure, like all of us, you I believe in many things, gods being just one of them. If we proportion our attachment to each belief to the evidence for it then we are less likely to believe something false, and probably more likely to believe something true. That’s really the best we can do.

‘Same pattern of lies repeated decades later.’ Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Dr Dionne Joseph, believes that gender transitions for young adults are one of the biggest medical scandals of our time, as a Finnish study reveals transitioning impacted mental health symptoms.

The promoters of “gender-affirming care” tried to quash scientific debate on its effects through name-calling and by designating as “settled science” the claim that it improves the mental health of dysphoric kids. It’s now clear why they feared open scientific inquiry.

📰A new Finnish study reports that youth gender transitions (under age 23) did not improve mental health symptoms. For some youth, medical gender reassignment may have had a negative impact. Link ⬇️ /1

In my career defending academic freedom and free speech, I never saw anything become as immediately radioactive as views that ran counter to the narrative on trans issues. Papers were retracted, compelled speech was treated as normal, and people were canceled for saying things that would have sounded like common sense just a few years earlier. It seemed to become a kind of secular blasphemy overnight. And usually, that is a sign that the true believers know, at some level, that they are on shaky ground. @hoovlet

Bluesky may not be ideal for testing your political or ideological theories in the Socratic ideal, but is probably a good platform for technical discussions where, for example, some genuine scientists (as opposed to social ones) are sifting through research for a paper, or sharing information on a complex topic. So Bluesky is probably fulfilling a different function to X. There is an argument in favour of retreating to a quiet space and shutting out noise to solve a technical problem.

I'm blocked by thousands of accounts on Bluesky I've never even interacted with, since I almost never post. People over there block on first contact with any ideological friction. That results in a bunch of small isolated communities. Not ideal for a social media app.

Hey @LouisTheroux! Remember me? We were pretty good friends but then they destroyed my career and you stood by and watched. Anyways, don't you think it's somewhat hypocritical for @amnesty to complain about the Manosphere when they went to court to argue women aren't protected in UK law?
Amnesty UK@AmnestyUK

Watching Into the Manosphere, it’s easy to see it as collection of individuals sharing hateful views. But that framing is exactly what the people interviewed want. When we see them as isolated trolls, we miss the bigger picture. The influencers targeting women’s autonomy are not alone. There is coordinated movement investing in rolling back women’s rights. Amnesty research uncovered 65+ UK anti-rights groups, 32 of which spent £106 million between 2019-2023. This is a well-funded attack. The Alliance Defending Freedom used the US courts to dismantle Roe v. Wade. Emboldened by their wins in the US, they are now importing those strategies to roll back freedoms in the UK. The Alliance Defending Freedom increased its spending in the UK by 187% between 2019 and 2023, for a total of £3.9 million. They have their sight on women’s rights. The profit-seeking manosphere gets rich from young men’s disenfranchisement. They blame women and feminism for the issues young men face. Meanwhile, the anti-rights movement invests millions of pounds to make changes through policy. Their goal is to rewrite who deserves dignity and freedom. Watching Louis Theroux's Into the Manosphere, it’s easy to see it as collection of individuals sharing hateful views. This is not just hate. It is an industry. But we know even the most organised money can’t win against organised people. The fightback is now.

The number of people who can’t understand why Enoch Burke is a bad look for the GC movement is mindblowing. The dude got fired and banned from the premises because he got nasty and aggressive with his boss, and he’s in jail because he keeps violating the no trespassing order. They’ve let him out on multiple occasions, and he just keeps going back to the school. He’s also been aggressive and rude in court, as has his family - which is why they, too, are in jail. Enoch Burke is not someone we should be supporting. If he’d behaved this way for any other reason, no one would have any problem understanding why his behavior is unacceptable.

Burke may have been disruptive and his behaviour may have warranted a disciplinary procedure of some nature. The material question is: did anything he did or said warrant dismissal? This remains formally unresolved and people need to refrain from comments on a democratic legal process. People have quite emotional and angry exchanges in work places every day. They do not regularly end in dismissals. It is impossible to accept that the principal’s instruction to the staff was well intentioned. Any rational person even remotely aware of the controversial nature of the gender debate (as she could hardly avoid being) could not issue such an instruction without being conscious of its implications.

I keep getting into discussions about Enoch Burke. I'm putting a line under it. My views on the matter are that his suspension was 100% related to gender identity belief, that the school Principal behaved unjustly albeit with good intention by requesting all staff to use they/them pronouns, that Burke was disruptive and his behaviour objectionable and that this warranted a disciplinary procedure. Was it gross misconduct justifying skipping the first three steps of routine misconduct hearings? This is questionable. Some will say yes, some will say no. Yes, he is in jail because he violated court orders. The orders arose because he refused to accept the terms of his suspension (prohibited from entering school grounds). Ultimately I think two types of extremism encountered each other at Wilsons Hospital School - one, a type of Evangelical Christianity, the other, gender identity belief. Burke has been used as a mechanism by which to further silence any and all critique of gender identity belief in Ireland. We need more discussion - more open conversation, not less. At least now people are aware that teachers have been compelled to use preferred pronouns. It is only in very recent months that the Department of Education confirmed that teachers are not required to do so - thanks to an article and coverage in the Irish Times. Remember? In January the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (true story) produced a guide saying schools MUST use preferred pronouns and then the Department responded. Maybe it's thanks to Enoch that the issue was brought to this. Enoch was never violent. Disruptive yes. I do not agree with his religious beliefs and I think he could have protested the instruction in other more productive ways. But here we are. ENDS. I will not be responding to any comments on this.
