Most reasonable people believe that in highly contentious issues the only answer is always some kind of compromise.
It is not true.
Hilary Cass has done a great job in pushing back against “trans rights” extremism. But she also refers to people who think no child should ever “transition” as extremists. She has adopted what she clearly sees a moderate, kind, middle-of-the-road position - that child “transition” should be rare but for some children will be necessary.
She is ignoring the issue of long-term harm - about which a two-year trial will show nothing but the long-delayed (thwarted) Data Linkage study could have helped to illuminate.
She is ignoring the fact that some 98% of children who take puberty blockers will go on to (extremely harmful) cross-sex hormones.
She is ignoring the pressures on teachers to go along with social “transition” of some children - even
if they believe it is wrong and harmful.
She is ignoring the pressures on other children to go along with the “trans” child’s identity and pronouns, and the confusion this could cause.
She is ignoring the nonsense in the schools’ guidance that a child may socially “transition” but must keep to single-sex spaces - which will make no sense to teachers, children, or the child concerned.
She is ignoring the large number of activist teachers who may abuse the possibility of socially “transitioning” a child without informing parents.
The truth is that no child is “born in the wrong body”.
No child should be lied to that they can or should “change sex”.
These are not “extreme” positions. They call for a courageous assertion of reality in the face of sustained emotional blackmail.
The fact is, no compromise is possible here.
