@IraninHyderabad Why is it so easy to kill Iran’s govt officials? Why let themselves be martyrs at the hands of cowards. The honor of martyrdom should be due to fighting on equal footing, not by being an easy kill as the other side hide in deep bunkers. Is it time to redefine “martyrdom” concept?

English has an amazing and underutilized system of direction adverbs: hither/thither/whither (to here/there/where) hence/thence/whence (from here/there/where) They were very common in Old English, as hider, þider, hwider, heonan, þanon, and hwanon. Now, they are sadly considered archaic, and mostly really only used as jokes. We have replaced them with just here, there, and where, and use context or “to” to demonstrate the direction.

Tanzania's forced collectivization under Julius Nyerere killed more people per capita than Stalin's agricultural disasters, yet Western intellectuals still romanticize ujamaa as "African socialism." Between 1967 and 1975, Nyerere's government forcibly relocated over 13 million Tanzanians—roughly 80% of the rural population—into collective villages called ujamaa. The state promised modern amenities, shared prosperity, and liberation from "capitalist exploitation." Instead, they delivered mass starvation. Agricultural output collapsed by 50% within five years. Food imports skyrocketed from 50,000 tons in 1970 to 400,000 tons by 1974. Rural villagers who had fed themselves for generations suddenly couldn't grow enough grain to survive winter. The mechanics were predictably Austrian. When you destroy private property rights and eliminate price signals, you obliterate the knowledge that makes agriculture work. Farmers knew their local soil, rainfall patterns, and crop rotations. But central planners in Dar es Salaam decided that "scientific socialism" trumped centuries of accumulated farming wisdom. They forced communities to abandon fertile ancestral lands for designated plots that bureaucrats selected from maps. Villages that resisted faced military force—troops literally burned homes to drive families into the collectives. And the damn tragedy continues reverberating today. Tanzania remains one of Africa's poorest countries, importing food despite having some of the continent's best agricultural land. Per capita income in 2023 sits at $1,192—lower than Bangladesh. You can draw a straight line from ujamaa's destruction of property rights to Tanzania's persistent poverty. But mention this at any development economics conference and watch professors explain how Nyerere had "good intentions" and the real problem was "insufficient implementation." Lesson: Collectivism fails equally hard across race, language, geography, population size, education level, continent, or any other possible metric you can dream of.

In 2006, I accidentally ran a red light experiment on my chickens. We left town for Christmas during a cold spell and put them in the garage with a 250W red bulb from the feed store (the only bulb they had left). Came back to an explosion of eggs. We'd used regular bulbs before to no effect. I started shining it on myself while I worked. At first for the warmth, then as evening lighting because my eyes felt better. Soon my sleep improved. Found some obscure NASA wound-healing research on Google and a world of "cold lasers" and never looked back. That was 20 years ago. Welcome to the party, Nature.

🚨 REPORT | An Israeli citizen was arrested in Las Vegas after police found a cache of weapons, lab equipment, and more than 1,000 samples of unknown liquids at a home tied to a widening biosecurity investigation, the Los Angeles Times reports. Ori Solomon, 55, is accused of illegally possessing firearms and improperly disposing of hazardous waste. Authorities said officers in protective gear removed materials from the home, which were consistent with those found in a separate case in California. That investigation began when a foul smell led officials to a warehouse in Reedley, where they discovered a hidden lab containing thousands of biological samples, 1,000 lab mice, and evidence of at least 20 infectious agents including SARS, hepatitis, and dengue. Prosecutors say Chinese national Jia Bei Zhu ran a scheme from there, importing COVID tests from China and selling them as American-made, and a congressional report flagged over $1.3 million in unexplained payments from Chinese banks tied to the operation. Investigators found Zhu had listed a Las Vegas house as bail collateral and called it hundreds of times over the past year, making it a key lead that led police to raid the Sugar Springs Drive property, where Ori Solomon was identified as the manager.

Not in the headline: Police arrested a man named Ori Solomon, a 55-year-old Israeli citizen, investigators found a cache of weapons and arrested Solomon on federal weapons charges. This should be a major story.

Engineers in Kenya built a tunnel underneath a highway to reconnect a centuries-old elephant migration route that had been cut off by new construction. Then they had to figure out how to get the elephants to actually use it. Workers lined the entire inside of the concrete tunnel with fresh elephant dung to create a familiar scent trail. A bull elephant named Tony followed it through first, then led his entire herd to the other side. The tunnel is fourteen feet high. The migration route is hundreds of years old.

After Israel occupied the Gaza Strip in 1967, it lied to Palestinians with promises of visas and jobs in South America. Hundreds, possibly thousands of Palestinians were sent on one-way flights, expelled from Palestine because they had the wrong DNA (they were Palestinian, not Jewish): “That was the last contact the Palestinians would have with any authority connected to the work program, because it did not exist. They had been tricked into boarding a deportation flight by the Mossad, Israel’s covert intelligence agency, as part of a secret scheme to exile Palestinians from the Gaza Strip en masse. Stranded in a country whose language they did not speak, the new arrivals found themselves with no money, no housing, no jobs, no connections, and no way of getting back home.” 972mag.com/paraguay-schem…
