@FACupFactfile @henrywinter So when Southampton reached two finals in 1900 and 1902 or when Spurs won in 1901 were they among the top teams in the country - or were they ‘non-league’ teams, in the same sense as we understand that today?

@FACupFactfile @henrywinter But that ‘hierarchy’ is only there because the FL won the contest to emerge as a truly national league post-1920. Most history is written by the winners but that doesn’t make it right. Saints were a top tier team for four of those nine semis
