The cheating was never 'a mistake'... Jughead knew she always loved Archie. She'd kissed him 5 min after she broke up with J in season 2. She went on to get engaged to Archie. It was him that she was kissing at the end of it all.

When looked at from s1-7 there is nothing epic about that ship. Like I somewhat got the appeal in the early seasons even though it didn't appeal to me, but you have to consider all the seasons.

Though... the pilot was barchie, they kissed in s2, kissed (cheated) in s4, fwb in s5, relationship and engagement in s6, and had a longer sl than other ships in s7 and the only one to kiss/have that kind of romantic moment outside of the poly in the finale.
