@PeatWorrier ok, but isn't that quite common - that laws aren't reformed, for one reason or another, & that the situation continuing is not what those who argued *against* the reform were ever defending?
I can argue against all Harm Reduction policies *AND* remain sad that drug users die.
English

Holyrood's decision not to reform the law on assisted dying leaves us with the status quo - a legal limbo which will add to the store of human suffering, but which is also inconsistent with the explanations given by the majority for opposing legislation. thenational.scot/politics/25957…

@G_S_Bhogal @Devon_Eriksen_ I think you're all over-thinking it.
English

@Devon_Eriksen_ That's not how I read it, and not how I believe Buffett intended it. The point is that if you choose another marble, you wouldn't just acquire that person's life, but also their personhood, down to every neuron. You would literally become the person the marble represents.
English

Yarvin is correct, but let me make it clearer and pithier.
Draw another marble from the jar, you'll get the same one.
Draw again, you'll get the same one.
Draw fifty million jillion squabillion times, you'll get the same one.
Because YOU ARE THE MARBLE.

Note that since we are all identical (under the skin), and all born with an identical soul from the standard Antechamber of Souls, the same lives would work well for all of us. Yes I am a Liberal and believe in Science

@Femmetastic3 @jomickane The one thing I really regret is not having gone to the course convenro in relation to the non-literate. I knew I'd be lambasted as racist etc for doing so - I think it actually felt more oppressively orthodox in 2012 than in 2020 - but it would've been the right thing to do.
English

@lewisesee @jomickane I invigilated exams at a top 10 uni. Exam halls full of Chinese students with poor English, asking what ‘competition’ means in a Business exam (WTF?). Cheating was rife. UK students doing peripheral courses like Accounting in Fashion.
English

@suzania Fine, but terms like "support staff" tend to be used by a lot of people in a lot of roles because it saves time, though it demeans their dignity. Academics, for example, completely disdain those they term "support staff". The actual "support staff" just grit their teeth.
English

@jomickane (yes, post-grad lit has led me to the poorly-paid, diminishing-returns world of TEFL, but it's also where I met my now-wife so I win)
English

@jomickane One of the gigs TEFL-ers try to get is the "pre-sessional", the intensive course onto which International Sts are put when they don't quite make the Eng. level required for the degree applied for.
In 10 yrs, I have NEVER met a TEFL-er who has EVER failed anyone on a pre-sessional

@PcodesDev @zoomafrika1 Let's look at what our "tiny peninsula" gave "the cradle of humanity" & call it quits, yeah?
English

@zoomafrika1 The Mercator map didn't just distort sizes it shrank Africa to soothe a colonial inferiority complex. When your tiny peninsula looks bigger than the cradle of humanity, you start believing you're the center of the world. Classic white fragility in 16th-century ink.

There's almost nothing that can shape your life as much as simply reading and understanding history

Today, Iran has replaced Germany as a frightening threat, and, incredibly, Europe still looks away, apparently not absorbing the fact that at least 50 million human beings died because evil was ignored in 1936. billoreilly.com/b/Accepting-Ev…

@PamphletsY &, weirdly, it's probably not because of housing policies & probably not because of the economy

@lewisesee can’t speak to this controversy on account of not knowing much if anything about it
English

@WingsScotland You've got to imagine Garavelli, Wark & Sturgeon share the odd text: we're all saying [x/y/z] on this, yes?
