#DidYouKnow there are TWO exciting migrations happening in the Mystic River right now? River herring and American eels are currently making their way from saltwater to freshwater as part of their life cycle. Species that do this are called diadromous! 🐟
Happy #ArborDay River Hawks! 23 new trees and shrubs were added to the UML Arboretum in partnership with the Office of Sustainability, Facilities Management, @lpct, @MassDCR and @CityofLowellMA.
A special shout out to all the faculty, staff and student volunteers!!

In this season of gratitude, THANK YOU to all donors for your commitment to the planet. EarthShare is grateful to have you as a valued member of our community. Your support helps us realize our vision of everyone taking action for the planet! #ThankYou#EarthShare
@SustainableUML@lpct Hooray for head-starting turtles! It takes a village to support our local wildlife, thank you for raising awareness about these incredible animals.
It is a good reminder that record warmth is outpacing record cold by 2 to 1. Just because it's cold in the US, much of the planet is seeing above average temperatures. #climatecrisis
Pale Blue Dot is a photo of Earth that was taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990 from a distance of about 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) as it was leaving our solar system. This is what Carl Sagan said about the photo:
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor, and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
MIGRATION ALERT: More than 600 MILLION birds predicted for tonight! Given the tragic mass window collisions in Chicago (see our previous post), it's an important time to dim nonessential outdoor lights at night & make your windows safer for birds: birdcast.info/science-to-act…
Our week started off on such a bright note with a suprise gift from the @cummingsdotcom through their Make A Difference Dollars MAD$ program to support our STEM/STEAM-based afterschool program, Lowell Leaders in Stewardship. Thank you for your amazing support!
Bald Eagles are coming back in MA—we're at nearly 100 breeding pairs, up from 0 in the 1980’s.
But since 2021, 4 eagles have been killed by second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs).
This is a crisis, and we must act.
