Jeremiah wrote, “The heart is deceitful above all things.” David also says, “Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins.” But David doesn’t say, “I’m going to do shadow work” or embark on a journey of self-discovery to better understand these misunderstood parts of himself. In fact, even while being unjustly pursued, oppressed, and misunderstood, he consistently seeks God to search his heart. There may be aspects of our motives that are dark and hidden from us. But the solution is not self-integration, it is surrender. We pray that God would reveal those things within us, confess them, call them what they are: evil, and take responsibility for them.
