@prestonjbyrne It's not about unpopular ideas per se, but dangerous speech. It's a question of whether you value society as a whole over the rights of the individual. And also a question of whether you value somebody's right to make speech over somebody else's right to not suffer from it.

British institutional language like "proportionate regulation," "keeping people safe," and "balanced approaches" are just euphemisms for "we support the state controlling what people say."

@prestonjbyrne Don't is a reasonable view though, perhaps even the majority view in the UK. The American First Amendment has its benefits but also its risks.

Our choice to publish the Free Speech Act as a completed bill was because we wanted to circumvent the cautious party politics that has prevented a real free speech bill, an effective one, from being produced for 30 years.
From Wednesday, it's up to British voters.

I have already heard the objections to the Free Speech Act from folks within the opposition parties. "This goes too far."
The answer to those objections is simple: you either want a First Amendment for Britain, or you don’t.
