I’m surprised more academics don’t identify with rural America. It experienced a slow economic decline over many years, with a rapid escalation of its demise after 2008.

Some pics of hay bales in the Civil War. Union army purchase records show each weighed ~250 lbs. How were these stacked up? Seems too heavy for one person to pull. The group on top of the stack suggests it took a lot of labor to load, unload, store, and reload these provisions.
