Both Winstanley and Chelsea owner Behdad Eghbali were at odds, with Winstanley refusing Xabi Alonso’s request. In the end, they had no choice but to bid as low as £8 million. Winstanley and Behdad Eghbali didn’t buy into the idea of a 33-year-old player; they saw him as too old and too slow for the project. Their focus is on players aged 26 to 29, or maybe 30 if the cost is reasonable. But once again, they bid too low. I was told Enzo Maresca requested Mike Maignan privately last summer, but Chelsea, especially Winstanley, chose to go too low, a move that nearly derailed the deal. According to my source, Xabi Alonso didn’t want the saga to sour his relationship with the club, as he has other options.
