Still seeing an embarrassing amount of confusion about the Islamic State in Iraq’s transition from ISI to ISIS, when the two orgs weren’t even superficially the same thing.
ISI was essentially a rebel group formed with fundamentally defensive objectives, namely “chuck the United States out of Iraq.” Their strategy, behavior and partnerships reflected that accordingly.
When Baghdadi formed ISIS, he eschewed those objectives for “we’re going to conquer any and everything”, permitted avowedly genocidal behavior (not for the sake of destabilizing the Iraqi government, for the purpose of massacring anyone they deemed to be insufficiently Sunni), and he notably butchered all of the “moderate” Al-Qaeda dudes who were in ISI.
That’s like eliding the 13 Colonies 1776-era coalitional governments with the 1783 US government, just because there was personnel overlap. That just doesn’t logically work — new US government existed for a completely different purpose, and inhabited a different historical and societal context.
Or to use a simpler analogy, it’s like if a car company coming out with a new model of car, while reusing some components from an old car.
