@owlthatissuperb @PhaentGames >without something terribly distressing coming up
I'm guessing this is a key factor?
Do you mean such things were in fact coming up, or you're worried they will?
English

@PhaentGames I get teary-eyed maybe about that often. Maybe 20% of the time a tear or two escape, probably while watching a movie
Had a decent cry a few weeks ago though an it was so cathartic. Wish I could tap into that more often, and without something terribly distressing coming up
English

@carmenleelau Reading this was bittersweet for me as I have always tended to be timeless with poor short term memory. It can be beautiful and peaceful but the costs are real too. Thank you for expressing both so well

@carmenleelau The link you give here leads to a different article! I think it should be altered.substack.com/p/timelessness

My main hope is for a calamity _only just_ bad enough for us to take effective action. Unfortunately that is a very bad calamity.

This is the bane of my life
Also why Memento and There Is No Antiemetics Division really got to me

As we know, there are remembered remembereds; there are some things we remember. We also know there are remembered forgottens; that is to say we remember there are things we have forgotten. But there are also forgotten forgottens — the ones we have forgotten we don't remember.

@NathanpmYoung Interesting! Ime it's coffee from an aeropress because it's still full of grounds

This but from a couple hundred years ago and I'm grateful my children and wife all survived and I don't have to work long days doing manual labour or be called up for war.

My trick to staying happy is to pretend I’m a hunter from the last Ice Age transported to our time. Suddenly the smallest things – glass windows, locks, bound books – are marvels beyond telling. The tap runs with ever-flowing water. I’m grateful not to be impaled by a boar.

@An_Angel_of_God @Medievalists Thank you for making me spray soup across the table
English

@Medievalists "Transcribed" is not an accurate word to describe what they did to these manuscripts. You could say they "tronscribed" or "vranscribed" them, I guess.
English

@phantom_opus Hopefully some stuff in here is useful for advanced users too :)

@algekalipso I haven't read the post, but it doesn't seem obvious that thinking requires phenomenal experience
(eg LLMs think but I don't believe they have experience)

@anesmithbeck Thanks for this! Definitely the best beginner intro I've come across so far
English

@SeanMombo Mine is coffee and I'm happy.
(Really, I probably haven't found mine and that's good)

@aliceisplaying I like to think one day we'll have a test for whether you'll become hopelessly addicted or shrug it off
But maybe those people are just*not addicted _yet_*
English

@aliceisplaying But yeah it seems like a lot of people are now addicted who wouldn't otherwise be
