A massive nuclear waste tomb in the Pacific is beginning to crack and leak.
The Runit Dome, constructed in the late 1970s on a remote island in the Marshall Islands, was built to contain over 120,000 tons of radioactive debris left behind by U.S. nuclear testing. Among the waste is plutonium-239, a highly dangerous isotope that remains radioactive for more than 24,000 years.
The dome stretches roughly 377 feet (115 meters) across and was never properly sealed at the base. Instead, it rests directly on porous coral, allowing groundwater to flow freely beneath it.
Now, rising sea levels and increasingly powerful storms are stressing the structure. Cracks have formed in the concrete, and scientists have already detected elevated radiation levels in the surrounding soil and water.
While the current leaks are still considered relatively minor, experts warn that as oceans continue to rise, the risk of a much larger release will grow.
Built as a temporary fix decades ago, the Runit Dome now stands as a stark reminder: the radioactive waste sealed inside it will remain hazardous long after our civilizations are gone.

Kylian Mbappe’s knee injury was misdiagnosed after Real Madrid medical staff performed an MRI scan on the wrong leg back in December.
When no problem was found after a scan of his uninjured right knee, the 27-year-old featured in three games for Madrid before the mistake was realised and rectified.

🚨Best Manchester United signing each season since Sir Alex Ferguson retired:
• Juan Mata — 2013/14
• Luke Shaw — 2014/15
• Anthony Martial — 2015/16
• Paul Pogba — 2016/17
• Nemanja Matić — 2017/18
• Fred — 2018/19
• Bruno Fernandes — 2019/20
• Amad Diallo — 2020/21
• Cristiano Ronaldo — 2021/22
• Casemiro — 2022/23
• Jonny Evans — 2023/24
• Leny Yoro — 2024/25
• Bryan Mbeumo — 2025/26
We’ve had some decent summers… but also some absolute disasters. 2016/17 was tough — choosing between Zlatan Ibrahimović and Pogba wasn’t easy, but I went with Pogba because of longevity and overall impact.
The 2023/24 says a lot. We signed Rasmus Højlund, Mason Mount, André Onana… yet I’d still rate Evans on a free as the best piece of business that season.
Some hits, some misses… but a few signings genuinely carried us through difficult years.
Who’s on your list? Would you change any of these? 👇💬

English

@BgKkys @FabrizioRomano Yes, Sir Alex Ferguson holds the all-time record with 49 trophies across his career (St Mirren, Aberdeen, Man Utd). Pep's 40 puts him second.

@Utdtruthful If true...
“I understand... but you have to backtrack as well b/c they have had a few calls [in their favour] this year... .”
A few calls this way, a few that way?! - is this the logic refs use when officiating?! If so, then they're fcuking d*ckhead idiots!

🚨🗣️ Mike Dean [former PL referee]: “They will complain but they didn't complain when Dalot wasn't sent off in the Manchester derby.
“I think the two incidents are completely different. Maguire is a dead cert, it's a simple decision. It's easy - it's a sending-off all day.
“The first one could have been a penalty but there was doubt about how he went down - that's why he hasn't given it. I could see why he didn't give it. And I can see why it's referee's call.
“I understand they have made a complaint but you have to backtrack as well because they have had a few calls [in their favour] this year that have gone on referee's call.” #MUFC [Soccer Saturday]

Decisions, decisions. Amad Diallo was a penalty. That gets given as a free-kick anywhere else on the pitch. It’s even more a penalty than the Matheus Cunha penalty (which was a pen, however “soft”). Amad was just less theatrical. Penalty not given. Wrong decision. Harry Maguire was a penalty and red card. DOGSO. Penalty and red card given. Correct decision.
Understandable debate over the decisions and inevitable frustration for Manchester United. But United have benefited from decisions that go their way this season. All clubs have these issues, examples, frustrations. The main issue here is …
1) General standard of officiating in the Premier League. Amad decision was poor. Even more investment required in grass-roots refereeing, in fast-tracking talent, in training up academy graduates who don’t make it as pros, and in continued work to improve further the Select Group refs. PL has some good officials. Just need more.
2) Football belongs to fans, not officials. Fans deserve to know what is going on in real time. When decision/incident being discussed by officials, audio should be played live. The authorities don’t want to, feel it places too much pressure on officials so content themselves with brief explanation when announcing decision and clarification on PL Match Centre. Fans in the stadium and tuning in pay a lot for tickets and subscriptions, respectively, and shouldn’t be kept in the dark.
Audio works well in rugby union and cricket (and acknowledging those sports have more pauses in play). l went to a VAR demonstration (not PL) earlier this week given by an elite official. Hearing the audio between officials gave insight into the process - and respect for what they are dealing with at speed, especially with players trying to con them.
You are never going to get complete consistency over decisions. There’s always going to be an element of subjectivity with so many incidents. But fans deserve more transparency and accountability. It might restore some trust. #BOUMUN
