A cell cannot survive without its membrane. An animal cannot without its skin. A nation cannot survive without borders. The distinction between in and out is the core organizing principle of organic systems—of life itself. The same principle applies to economics. A domestic economy is the area wherein free trade is mutually permitted, the economic body or nation. Tariffs etc. differentiate the domestic economy from foreign economies. And like any boundary, they protect what is inside—invaluable human & physical capital, investment, technology—from what is outside—EU regulatory burden, Chinese IP theft, offshoring etc. An economy without tariffs is a skinless man or castle without walls. It's either dead or dying.
