Last night I was given a rare access to the highly fortified security camp where prisoners of war are being detained in Ukraine. I thank President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for granting my request to visit the two Ghanaian prisoners of war. I can confirm that our citizens are alive and well. Their rights under international law have been commendably respected by Ukrainian authorities. I appreciate that my request was quite unusual and the first of its kind from an African Foreign Minister, as I was informed — I am therefore immensely grateful that our request was not declined in affirmation of our cordial bilateral relations. This significant gesture gives me more confidence that our negotiations for their release will be successful. It is refreshing to hear our two compatriots (identities concealed for good reason) say that they are determined to become advocates against the modus operandi of trafficking networks and willing to devote the rest of their lives educating vulnerable Africans how to avoid such predicaments.

I met with Ghana’s Foreign Minister @S_OkudzetoAblak and thanked him for this visit, the first in our countries’ history. We discussed specific areas where we can advance our partnership: agriculture, defense cooperation, and expanding programs for Ghanaian students to study at Ukrainian universities. Ghana will chair the African Union next year, and it is important that we make the most of this period to strengthen ties between Ukraine and Africa. We also held detailed discussions on how Russia recruits citizens of Ghana and other countries in Africa to participate in the war against Ukraine, and how we can counter this. Our teams will remain in contact on this issue. I am grateful to Ghana for its clear support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for backing our positions in UN General Assembly resolutions.

Informed by our shared commitment to sovereignty and the UN Charter, I held a productive meeting today with H.E. Yurii Tokar, Ambassador of Ukraine to Kenya. We reviewed the progress of the strategic cooperation established between President William Ruto and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Kenya remains a steadfast advocate for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict and continues to support multilateral efforts that prioritize global peace and the territorial integrity of all nations. During our discussions, I underscored the Government’s serious concern regarding Kenyans captured on the frontlines of the Russian-Ukrainian war and held as POWs. We discussed the safety of these Kenyans and mechanisms for possible repatriation. I also briefed the ambassador on what Kenya was doing to address fraudulent recruitment of our nationals. @ForeignOfficeKE
