Happy #AfricaDay to our friends and partners across the African continent. Estonia’s 🇪🇪 cooperation with African nations has grown remarkably in recent years, especially in the fields of digital development, education, innovation, and business, as well as through collaboration in multilateral forums. Just last week, we opened two new honorary consulates in Gambia 🇬🇲 and Côte d'Ivoire 🇨🇮. Later this year, we will take another significant step as we open a new Embassy in Nairobi 🇰🇪, complementing our existing mission in Cairo 🇪🇬. We look forward to deepening these partnerships and creating new opportunities together.

I had a great meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Ghana and Estonia are likeminded partners who stand for the same values. I see great potential in deepening our cooperation in digitalisation and innovation.

Of all the horrors inflicted by Russia’s war, the abduction of Ukrainian children is one of its worst. Stealing children is a calculated Russian attack on Ukraine’s future. Bringing them home is a priority. We support this with funding, aid and sanctions. The EU today imposed new sanctions on individuals and entities in Russia for the systematic ‌unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children. The Kremlin’s expansionist ambitions extend far beyond its neighbors, and it is crucial to recognize their tactics.

We are excited to announce that, following their appointment by the President, Estonia’s new Ambassadors to our forthcoming embassies in Brazil 🇧🇷 and Kenya 🇰🇪 will be Ambassador @moonika_kase and Ambassador @schaerdaniel. Estonia 🇪🇪 has been steadily strengthening its ties with both regions in recent years, particularly in business and digital cooperation. The UAE stood with the Ukrainian people, and today Ukraine stands with the UAE. A million thanks to Ukraine. In moments like this, we discover who is truly close, and Ukraine has proven to be closer to us than many around us in the Middle East. As dozens of Iranian drones targeted our country, #Ukraine, with its hard earned experience in stopping them, stepped forward to help, sharing technology capable of disrupting their navigation systems with up to 90% success.

Last night I was given a rare access to the highly fortified security camp where prisoners of war are being detained in Ukraine. I thank President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha for granting my request to visit the two Ghanaian prisoners of war. I can confirm that our citizens are alive and well. Their rights under international law have been commendably respected by Ukrainian authorities. I appreciate that my request was quite unusual and the first of its kind from an African Foreign Minister, as I was informed — I am therefore immensely grateful that our request was not declined in affirmation of our cordial bilateral relations. This significant gesture gives me more confidence that our negotiations for their release will be successful. It is refreshing to hear our two compatriots (identities concealed for good reason) say that they are determined to become advocates against the modus operandi of trafficking networks and willing to devote the rest of their lives educating vulnerable Africans how to avoid such predicaments.

I met with Ghana’s Foreign Minister @S_OkudzetoAblak and thanked him for this visit, the first in our countries’ history. We discussed specific areas where we can advance our partnership: agriculture, defense cooperation, and expanding programs for Ghanaian students to study at Ukrainian universities. Ghana will chair the African Union next year, and it is important that we make the most of this period to strengthen ties between Ukraine and Africa. We also held detailed discussions on how Russia recruits citizens of Ghana and other countries in Africa to participate in the war against Ukraine, and how we can counter this. Our teams will remain in contact on this issue. I am grateful to Ghana for its clear support of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for backing our positions in UN General Assembly resolutions.

There are currently over 1,780 citizens from the African continent fighting in the Russian army. The African fighters are from 36 different countries spread across the continent, according to the Ukrainian government. reuters.com/world/europe/m…
