ONE MAN CRUSHES COUNCIL IN POTHOLE WAR USING FORGOTTEN LAW! Retired 68-year-old Derek Bennett took on lazy Hertfordshire County Council after they ignored dangerous potholes ruining roads in Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead. Using obscure Section 56 of the Highways Act 1980, he served legal notices, then dragged them to court when they failed to act. Judge at St Albans Crown Court ordered the council to fix THREE major roads within 20 days and awarded Bennett £1,650 costs. “If everyone did this, we’d have lovely roads within six months,” he said. Everyone knows Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb. 💡 Everyone is wrong. His name was Joseph Swan. Born in Pallion, Sunderland. Son of a failed entrepreneur. No university. No laboratory. No backing. Just a chemist's apprentice in his home town who couldn't stop thinking about light. He worked on it for twenty years. Along the way he invented bromide photographic paper. Artificial fibre, the process that led to rayon. Over seventy patents. And still nobody had made a lightbulb that worked. Then on the 18th of December 1878, in a lecture hall in Newcastle, he switched it on. It burned bright. Then it broke. But the idea was proven. ⚡ Six weeks later, 3rd February 1879, he demonstrated it again. This time it worked. Seven hundred people watched the room light up. Eight months before Thomas Edison. Edison heard about it. Filed a patent. Then sued Swan in America. The US Patent Office found against Edison. ✅ Edison sued Swan in Britain. The British courts found against Edison again. ✅✅ As part of the settlement, Edison was forced into a partnership with Swan. The company was called Ediswan. Swan's patents. Swan's filament design. Edison's name first. Eventually Edison bought him out. Swan was knighted in 1904. The Savoy Theatre, the first building in the world lit entirely by electricity, used his bulbs. It was the purest deposit of graphite ever found on earth. The only one like it. Ever. 🌍 Word spread fast. The Crown seized the mine, put armed guards on the fell and flooded it between diggings to keep the price high. Stealing graphite became a criminal offence. Punishable by transportation to Australia. Because this wasn't just for marking sheep. It was perfect for lining cannonball moulds. It made England's cannonballs rounder. Faster. More deadly. ⚔️ England had a pencil monopoly for nearly a century. Every artist, every cartographer, every engineer in Europe. All of them wanted what was in that one Cumbrian field. Slowly, workshops appeared in nearby Keswick. Cottage industries. Families cutting graphite into sticks. Wrapping them in string. Then sheepskin. Then wood. The pencil was born. ✏️ In a Cumbrian field. Because a storm uprooted a tree. There is still a pencil factory in Keswick today. On the same site it has always been. Did you know that?
